Microsoft Stock Forecast: MSFT May Break $570 as Azure Growth Holds at 40%

Source Tradingkey

TradingKey - As of the market close on August 21, Eastern Time, Microsoft (MSFT) stock closed at $481.15, having rebounded about 30% from its July low of around $380 since its earnings release on July 29.

According to data from Stock Analysis, as of August 21, 56 analysts set a consensus price target of $569.56, implying an upside of about 17%. From $380 to $481, the market has already repriced Azure's growth story. The question is, can this price target be delivered?

Why Microsoft Stock Is Fluctuating Wildly

Following the release of Microsoft's fiscal second-quarter earnings report in December 2025, revenue of $81.27 billion and earnings per share of $4.14 both beat expectations. However, Azure's growth rate of 39% was interpreted as a "growth slowdown," which, combined with a 65% year-over-year surge in capital expenditures, triggered an 11.7% plunge in the stock that day.

At the time, the market was in a period of peak anxiety over AI capital expenditures, and the cumulative decline of nearly 20% in Microsoft's stock price during the first half of the year was a direct reflection of this anxiety.

After the fourth-quarter fiscal results were released on July 29, a similarly better-than-expected performance delivered a starkly different outcome. During the quarter, Azure's growth accelerated to 43% from 40%, beating market expectations of 40%; revenue came in at $90.01 billion, topping expectations by about $2.4 billion; and adjusted earnings per share were $4.74.

The earnings report included $3.2 billion in investment gains from Anthropic, but excluding this, EPS still beat expectations by about $0.36. CEO Nadella stated that Azure's full-year revenue topped $100 billion for the first time. Following the report, the stock jumped as much as 9% in after-hours trading.

The contrast between the two earnings reports illustrates a key point: when growth slows, better-than-expected results cannot prevent a sell-off; when growth accelerates, the market responds positively. For a growth giant like Microsoft, investors focus more on marginal shifts in growth trends than on absolute profit in a single quarter. It took the market four months to rebuild trust in Azure's growth trajectory, and once broken again, that trust will be even harder to restore.

Azure Growth Holding at 40% Is Basic Condition for Stock to Break $570

JPMorgan (JPM) has raised Microsoft's price target to $625, forecasting Azure growth of about 45% for the next quarter. This expectation aligns closely with management's guidance on the call. Microsoft management stated that Azure demand continues to outpace available capacity, with constant-currency growth for the next quarter also expected to be around 45%.

Following the release of the fourth-quarter earnings report, Citi (C) raised its price target from $570 to $600, citing constant-currency Azure growth of 43% year-over-year, which beat expectations by 4 percentage points and showed accelerating growth, while the outlook was raised further to 45%, also exceeding expectations by 4 percentage points.

The key metric for verifying the authenticity of Azure demand lies in Copilot's paid conversion rate. Currently, M365 Copilot paid seats have surpassed 30 million, with net seat additions during the quarter more than doubling quarter-over-quarter. Based on an estimated 430 million M365 commercial users, the penetration rate stands at approximately 7%.

Technical Analysis: Microsoft Stock's Valid Breakout Above $500 Is Key

Microsoft closed at $481.15 on August 21, down slightly by 0.47%, with an intraday high of $484.16 and a low of $479.50. The stock has continued to pull back since hitting a high of $513.73 on August 10.

Key Resistance: The $500 psychological level is the strongest short-term resistance, which was tested multiple times in early August without a valid breakthrough. If it firmly holds above $500 on heavy volume, the upside target looks toward $510-$515.

Moving Average Resistance: The 7-day and 12-day moving averages converge densely at $493, forming a short-term resistance zone. The stock price currently trades below both moving averages, and a rebound to this area will face selling pressure. $480 is the first line of defense; if lost, the price may drop to test the 20-day moving average ($472) support zone.

Technical Signals: The 14-day RSI is at around 63.1, in neutral territory, having pulled back significantly from above 70 in early August, showing no obvious overbought or oversold conditions. Short-term moving averages have turned bearish, indicating that the pullback momentum has not yet fully dissipated.

Overall Outlook: In the short term, the stock will most likely fluctuate within the $472-$494 range. To break through $570, it must first effectively break above $500 to open up upside space. If it falls below $472 on heavy volume, caution is needed for a potential pullback to $426.

If the following signals emerge, the $570 target price will be difficult to realize:

Azure growth drops below 35% for two consecutive quarters, with paid Copilot user growth slowing; the stock price repeatedly fails to test $500 and breaks down below the $472 support level; capital expenditures as a percentage of revenue continue to climb in the next quarter's earnings report, while management gives no clear signal that spending is "adjustable."

Summary

Based on current data, the $570 price target is reasonable, but achieving it requires meeting the following two conditions simultaneously:

First, Azure's growth rate must remain above 40%. Both JPMorgan and Citi expect Azure's growth to be around 45% next quarter, aligning with management guidance. With supply-demand imbalances persisting and Copilot seat adoption accelerating, the probability of meeting this condition is high.

Second, the stock price must effectively break through the $500 resistance level. Currently trading at around $483, it is about 4% away. The stock touched $500 multiple times over the past month but failed to hold above it. If a breakout occurs on trading volume expanding to over 250 million shares (compared to the current 20-day average of about 200 million shares), the signal will carry higher credibility. This condition involves greater uncertainty.

Between the two conditions, Azure's growth offers higher certainty, whereas breaking above $500 remains a variable. If the stock closes above $500 on heavy volume over the next two weeks, the likelihood of reaching $570 over the next 6 to 12 months is relatively high.
