Choosing between a established retail turnaround and a fast-growing international giant involves weighing local stability against global expansion. Investors must decide if Advance Auto Parts (NYSE:AAP) or MercadoLibre (NASDAQ:MELI) is the better buy today.

Advance Auto Parts serves the essential automotive repair market in North America, while MercadoLibre operates a massive digital ecosystem across Latin America. They are often compared because both rely on consumer health and logistical efficiency. Each company offers a different risk profile for those looking to diversify their holdings through 2027.

The case for Advance Auto Parts

Advance Auto Parts provides automotive replacement parts, accessories, and maintenance items to both professional installers and do-it-yourself customers. Professional sales, which include products sold to garages, service stations, and auto dealerships, account for nearly 50% of the company's total revenue. The business also supports hundreds of independently owned stores under the Carquest brand while operating thousands of its own retail locations.

In its latest annual report for FY 2025, revenue reached about $8.6 billion, representing a decrease of approximately 5.4% compared to the prior year. The company reported net income of around $44.0 million, showing improvement over the previous year despite the decline in total sales. This focus on profitability is a key part of its strategy among retail stocks navigating a shifting economic environment.

As of its January 2026 balance sheet, the company carries a debt-to-equity ratio of roughly 2.4x. This metric, which compares total debt to shareholder equity, means liabilities are more than twice the size of the equity base. The current ratio, which measures the ability to pay short-term debts with current assets, is approximately 1.7x. Free cash flow, representing the cash remaining after capital expenditures, was just about negative $298 million for the period.

The case for MercadoLibre

MercadoLibre operates a massive digital ecosystem that integrates e-commerce, logistics, and fintech services across 18 countries in Latin America. Its primary services include the Mercado Libre Marketplace, which relies heavily on third-party sellers, alongside the Mercado Pago fintech platform for various financial services. The company serves a diverse group of users, including individuals and small businesses that use its network for payments and shipping.

Based on its latest annual report for FY 2025, revenue reached roughly $28.9 billion. This reflected a significant growth rate of around 39% compared to the previous fiscal year. Net income for the period was about $2.0 billion, indicating that the business is successfully scaling its profitability as it expands its footprint across the region.

According to its December 2025 balance sheet, the company maintained a debt-to-equity ratio of approximately 1.7x. This indicates that for every dollar of equity, the company has roughly $1.70 in total debt. The current ratio stands at approximately 1.2x, suggesting a functional balance of short-term assets to liabilities. Free cash flow was very strong for the period, reaching nearly $10.8 billion.

Risk profile comparison

Advance Auto Parts is currently managing several operational risks, including the implementation of its 2024 Restructuring Plan and a major supply chain transformation. The company faces intense competition from national chains like AutoZone (NYSE:AZO) and O'Reilly Automotive (NASDAQ:ORLY), as well as internet-based retailers. High debt levels may limit its financial flexibility, and its business remains sensitive to fuel costs and broader economic cycles that affect consumer spending.

MercadoLibre operates in a highly competitive environment, facing pressure from global e-commerce giants like Amazon.com Inc. (NASDAQ:AMZN) and various local financial institutions. The company is exposed to volatile macroeconomic conditions and currency devaluation across Latin American markets, which can impact financial results significantly. Additionally, it faces complex regulatory hurdles in multiple countries and must constantly defend against cybersecurity threats and fraud on its payment and commerce platforms.

Valuation comparison

Advance Auto Parts trades at a lower P/S ratio based on sales over the past twelve months, while MercadoLibre carries a higher Forward P/E based on future earnings estimates.

Which stock would I buy for 2027?

In some ways, this is a choice between a turnaround stock, Advance Auto Parts, and a transformation stock, MercadoLibre, given the latter started out as a Latin American version of eBay Inc. (NASDAQ:EBAY) but, like Amazon, has moved heavily into technology and business services.

MercadoLibre is in another year of heavy investment, as the company continues to expand its Mercado Envios and Mercado Pago platforms. The business delivered another strong quarter in the third quarter of its fiscal 2026. Net revenue surpassed $10 billion for the second time (the first being the prior quarter), growing 46% year-on-year. Income from operations was $448 million. That reflects some margin compression going on, however, due to higher energy costs resulting from the Iran war.

For the full year 2026, analyst consensus is that MercadoLibre will see revenue of more than $41 billion, a big $11 billion jump from 2025. That should come with net income of $1.9 billion, only a little less than 2025, largely due to energy price pressure.

Advance Auto Parts is in the midst of turning around the struggles it has experienced over the past few years, including sales growth, margins, and market share. The aftermarket auto parts business has been in a slump, largely due to a mix of factors: weak do-it-yourself demand, vehicle electrification, intense competition, and general pocketbook pressures on consumers.

Company management has been addressing the business's issues by rolling out a new multi-year turnaround program. That started in late 2024, including closing stores, optimizing store footprints, and overhauling its supply chain--for instance, reducing the number of carriers by 70% through consolidated shipments. To date, the turnaround program has had mixed success, especially in the first quarter of fiscal 2026, with results much better than expected: revenue of $2.6 billion and net income of $25 million. The second quarter disappointed on revenue, with $2 billion in sales, but net income did beat expectations. at $55 million. Analysts see full-year 2026 sales slightly lower year-over-year at around $8.5 billion, with net income improving to around $165 million, roughly four times 2025.

So which stock to go for? There are two strong considerations: one is that the American consumer has historically shown remarkable resilience, even in times when they are pinched, like today. The DIY market for car owners should improve as cost-conscious car owners look to maintain their vehicles rather than trade in for new ones. Advance's reasonable P/E and P/S ratios make it a tempting turnaround play too. MercadoLibre's forward P/E is too high for a company with its regional risk profile. It may take some time to see a solid return from Advance, but long-term investors have a chance to get in on a turnaround play at a very reasonable price.
