On its third-quarter 2026 earnings call, held on Oct. 29, 2026, First Solar (NASDAQ:FSLR) announced net sales of $1.2 billion. This revenue baseline matters because the manufacturer is locking in higher contracted prices across its backlog. Three key takeaways from management's call explain how the business is positioning itself for long-term growth.

1. First Solar Is Shifting Toward Project-Specific Deals With Better Pricing

Management is moving away from broad multiyear framework contracts to project-specific agreements that reduce inventory storage costs and lock in higher average selling prices, or ASPs, per watt.

Over the course of this year, while not closing the door on framework agreements with appropriate contractual protections, our customer engagements have shifted more toward project-specific contracting with the five projects and delivery schedules. From our perspective, the enhanced certainty surrounding project-specific contracts allows us to optimize module allocation and delivery.
-- Mark Widmar, Chief Executive Officer

2. Federal Trade Policies Provide a Structural Advantage Over Foreign Competitors

New trade protection rules under Section 232, a federal law allowing tariffs on imports that threaten national security, favor companies with domestic supply chains over rivals dependent on Chinese silicon.

As a technology company and the only fully integrated utility-scale solar manufacturer without dependency on a Chinese crystalline silicon supply chain, we believe we are structurally positioned to benefit from this environment.
-- Mark Widmar, Chief Executive Officer

3. Management Is Prepared to Shut Down Operations That Miss Economic Targets

The company maintains capital discipline by flexing production in India and weighing a total shutdown of its Malaysia plant if trade conditions fail to support baseline unit economics.

We expect the operating decision regarding our Malaysia facility to be binary, resulting in either operations at full or near full capacity of 1.8 gigawatt annually or a shutdown of production with a decision expected in the first half of 2027.
-- Mark Widmar, Chief Executive Officer

Looking Ahead

Power demand for data centers and artificial intelligence is accelerating across the utility sector. First Solar retains structural advantages through fully integrated domestic manufacturing and proprietary thin-film intellectual property, or IP, protecting its ownership of module designs. Management is focused on pricing discipline while watching regulatory clarity around foreign entity of concern rules, or FEOC, which dictate federal tax credit eligibility.

Our Ohio pilot line, designed to produce Series 6 size perovskite modules, remains on track to reach operational readiness in the first half of 2027.
-- Mark Widmar, Chief Executive Officer

A 44-gigawatt backlog secures delivery commitments through 2030, giving the business long-term cash visibility while it evaluates capacity expansion.

Our strong balance sheet allows us continued investment in the business while concurrently enabling capital return to shareholders.
-- Alex Bradley, Chief Financial Officer
