Stock Market Midday, Oct. 26: Tech Sector Rallies on Anthropic IPO Filing and Cooling Oil Prices

Source The Motley Fool

As of 11:31 a.m. ET, the Nasdaq Composite (NASDAQINDEX:^IXIC) is up 1.22% to 26,271, the S&P 500 (SNPINDEX:^GSPC) has climbed 0.91% so far today to 7,693, and the Dow Jones Industrial Average (DJINDICES:^DJI) is trading 0.31% higher at 52,379, as a historic technology IPO filing and cooling oil prices lift broad sentiment.

Gold is up 0.73% to $4,037.10 as of 11:31 a.m. ET and the 10-Year Treasury yield is up to 5.00%. Real estate is the leading sector while healthcare is today's primary loser, and consumer cyclical shows notable strength.

Today's biggest moves

Surgery Partners is soaring 46% after confirming it will be acquired for approximately $5.7 billion, while Tesla is surging higher following an analyst upgrade. Conversely, Brazil-linked MercadoLibre is trading nearly 10% lower as presidential election results weighed on South American equities during the morning session.

What this means for investors

The technology sector is seeing renewed interest today following a historic IPO filing from AI developer Anthropic. Investors are weighing the risks against its reported more than 1,300% year-over-year revenue growth in Q2.

A slight decline in crude oil prices is helping support the S&P 500 amid easing global inflation concerns.

Among mega-cap technology names, Meta Platforms announced a $95.0 billion fundraising effort for AI infrastructure. Tesla received an upgrade from Barclays analyst Dan Levy, who moved the stock to "buy" from "hold" and increased his target price to $450 from $370. Investors are closely monitoring the upcoming Federal Reserve decision and Amazon's results later this week.

Gold breaks $4,000 as oil becomes the inflation problem — $3,943 is the line that mattersSpot gold closed at $3,995.6 on October 23, down about 4.1% for the week and at its lowest since mid-July, and traded near $3,988 on October 26 even as Brent crude settled at $116.72 and Middle East supply risk stayed elevated. The war premium stopped working because oil is now the inflation trade: December Fed hike odds are 68.9% and the 10-year yield is 4.988%. Here are the three numbers, the transmission chain, and the July low at $3,943 that decides whether this is a bottom or a bigger correction.
