Will Dogecoin Reach $1 in 2027? The Answer Might Shock You.

Key Points

  • The Dogecoin cryptocurrency was created as a joke, so it wasn't designed with any particular use-case in mind.

  • The meme-coin is currently down by almost 90% from its 2021 record high, but a promising new development could spark a fresh rally.

  • Unfortunately, any potential upside from here could be reversed by Dogecoin's ever-increasing supply.

The Dogecoin (CRYPTO: DOGE) cryptocurrency was named after the famous "Doge" internet meme. The two friends who created it in 2013 were trying to lighten the mood in the crypto industry, because at the time, many enthusiasts believed Bitcoin was on the cusp of transforming the entire financial system.

Dogecoin has no real utility, but that didn't stop speculative investors from latching onto the meme-coin. It soared to an all-time high of $0.73 per coin in 2021, which translated to a market capitalization of over $90 billion, so it was suddenly worth more than most companies in the S&P 500 index.

Missed AI’s "Act 1"? Act 2 Could Be 15x Bigger. Most investors think they missed the AI boat because they didn't buy Nvidia in 2005. But according to our analysts, we’re only at the end of "Act 1"—the R&D phase. "Act 2" is the global rollout. Continue »

Unfortunately, speculative frenzies never last, so Dogecoin has since lost almost 90% of its value and trades at just $0.08 per coin as I write this (Oct. 18). But developers are trying to revive the ecosystem with innovations like DogeOS, so could a fresh rally to $1 per coin be on the table as we move into 2027?

Dogecoin is getting a new application layer

The key to creating value for any cryptocurrency is having a sustainable source of demand. If consumers, businesses, or investors have a legitimate reason to buy it, then its price is likely to trend higher over time. Unfortunately, this is something Dogecoin has consistently lacked.

While Dogecoin can technically be used to make payments, just 2,373 businesses in the entire world are willing to accept it in exchange for goods and services (according to Cryptwerk). Perhaps it's no surprise given the coin's significant volatility, which would make cash-flow management a nightmare. But if consumers can't spend Dogecoin at their favorite stores, they have no reason to hold it.

But the team of developers behind the MyDoge self-custodial digital wallet are trying to give Dogecoin some real utility. They created an application layer called DogeOS, where people can build decentralized software applications that could ignite demand for Dogecoin. It's still in the testing phase, but in the future some of those apps might include games, decentralized crypto exchanges, and even lending and borrowing marketplaces.

DogeOS is compatible with the Ethereum (CRYPTO: ETH) virtual machine, the software engine that facilitates Ethereum's smart contracts. This enables DogeOS to provide the same app-building functionality as Ethereum, the world's most popular platform for creating decentralized software.

However, when people use an app built on the DogeOS layer, they will incur fees payable in Dogecoin rather than the traditional Ether cryptocurrency. These fees are often referred to as "gas," and they cover the computing costs required to process actions on a given app.

Therefore, every time someone uses a DogeOS-based app, they immediately generate demand for Dogecoin because it's required in order to pay fees. If the ecosystem becomes popular enough, the meme-coin could experience a sustainable rise in value over the long term.

Dogecoin's infinite supply is the biggest barrier to $1

Before investors race out to buy Dogecoin based on the potential of DogeOS, there are some things to consider. First, there isn't much reason for people to use it, because they can just build apps directly on the trusted, well-established legacy Ethereum platform instead. Second, any potential value created when people use Dogecoin to cover gas might be erased by the coin's ever-increasing supply.

New Dogecoins are issued through a process called mining. It involves people using computers to solve complex mathematical problems for the right to validate transactions on the blockchain, which is a critical process for maintaining a secure system of record. Validators are rewarded with payment in Dogecoin to encourage their ongoing participation.

A maximum of 5 billion coins can be mined each year, but there is no end date, so the circulating supply is going to increase until the end of time. In theory, this will steadily erode the value of each coin.

Roughly 156 billion Dogecoins are currently in circulation, so adding 5 billion more to the pool over the next year will result in dilution of around 3%. That means the current price per coin of $0.08 could fall to $0.078. The effect is far worse over the longer term; if we assume 5 billion coins are mined each year, supply will double to over 300 billion coins over the next three decades, potentially cutting the value of each coin in half.

There is no guarantee DogeOS will create value for Dogecoin, but even if it does, that value will gradually evaporate as supply increases. As a result, I don't think $1 per coin is in the cards for 2027 -- or potentially ever.
