As enterprise automation and cybersecurity converge, investors are weighing the potential of specialized software providers. Both C3.ai (NYSE:AI) and SentinelOne (NYSE:S) offer unique exposure to artificial intelligence, but they face different financial trajectories.

C3.ai focuses on enterprise-level applications that help organizations integrate predictive models into their operations. SentinelOne provides autonomous cybersecurity that protects digital assets without human intervention.

Comparing these two tech stocks reveals how growth rates and profitability goals shape the investment thesis for 2026.

The case for C3.ai

C3.ai provides a comprehensive suite of enterprise AI applications designed to accelerate digital transformation. The company sells its C3 Agentic AI Platform to diverse sectors, including manufacturing, utilities, and the federal government. Strategic partners like Baker Hughes (NASDAQ:BKR) and Microsoft (NASDAQ:MSFT) help drive adoption through reseller and co-sell agreements. This dependency adds a layer of risk to the business, though the company is shifting toward smaller contract sizes to broaden its base.

In its 2026 fiscal year (FY), ended April 30, revenue reached nearly $250.3 million, which represented a decline of 35.7% from the previous fiscal year. This revenue contraction coincided with a net loss of $470.4 million. The company reported a net margin of negative 187.9%, indicating that expenses significantly outpaced total sales. This trend follows a shift in the go-to-market strategy that emphasizes consumption-based pricing over large, upfront subscription fees.

As of its April 2026 balance sheet, the current ratio stands at 6.6x. The current ratio measures a company's ability to cover its short-term liabilities with its short-term assets. Its debt-to-equity ratio, which compares total debt to shareholder equity, was zero, indicating the company has no debt relative to its equity base. Free cash flow, which is cash flow from operations minus capital expenditures, was negative $190.7 million for the fiscal year.

The case for SentinelOne

SentinelOne utilizes artificial intelligence to power its Singularity Platform, which secures endpoints, cloud workloads, and identity credentials. The company relies heavily on a global ecosystem of channel partners, such as resellers and managed service providers, to reach its customers. By automating threat detection and response, the platform aims to replace traditional antivirus software with a more proactive security layer. Its global reach extends across various industries and government sectors through these strategic alliances.

In FY 2026, ended Jan. 31, revenue reached $1.0 billion, a growth rate of 21.9% compared to the previous year. Despite this top-line expansion, the company reported a net loss of $450.7 million. The net margin for the period was negative 45%, which is an improvement from some earlier fiscal periods. This growth indicates that the company is successfully scaling its footprint in the competitive cybersecurity market.

As of its January 2026 balance sheet, the current ratio is 1.4x. The debt-to-equity ratio is zero, meaning total liabilities do not outweigh the company's equity through traditional debt. Free cash flow for the fiscal year was positive at approximately $75.9 million. Note that stock-based compensation represented roughly 388.4% of operating cash flow, meaning reported cash generation is heavily inflated by this non-cash add-back.

Risk profile comparison

C3.ai faces significant operational risks as it continues to report net losses and undergoes a restructuring plan initiated in February 2026. The success of this efficiency-focused plan is not guaranteed and could cause further disruption to its sales efforts. The company also deals with long and unpredictable sales cycles, particularly when dealing with government entities. Furthermore, the market for enterprise AI is intensely competitive, with Microsoft and other large incumbents offering rival solutions.

SentinelOne operates in a cybersecurity market that is both fragmented and rapidly evolving. The company faces stiff competition from established vendors that have significantly larger product portfolios and more resources. Because the platform is primarily hosted on Amazon (NASDAQ:AMZN), any disruption to this cloud hosting relationship could impact service delivery. Additionally, as a security provider, the company is a high-value target for cyberattacks, and any perceived vulnerability could damage its reputation.

Valuation comparison

SentinelOne trades at a lower valuation relative to its sales, while C3.ai does not have future earnings estimates.

Which stock would I buy in 2026?

I have invested in C3.ai and SentinelOne, but between the two, I recommend investing in the latter. I bought SentinelOne stock because it was one of the early cybersecurity companies to employ AI in its platform. Now, AI is a growing threat to organizations around the world, because the tech can quickly and efficiently find security vulnerabilities. For example, AI going rogue hacked into Hugging Face recently.

This environment makes SentinelOne's AI-powered platform capable of repelling tech-driven hacks. The company's rising revenue illustrates the success of its technology. Its strong sales in FY 2026 continues in the current fiscal year, with Q2 revenue growth of 21% year over year to $292 million.

C3.ai looked like a compelling AI company when I invested, but then its CEO Thomas Siebel stepped down due to health issues last year. That contributed to C3.ai's 35.7% drop in revenue.

Siebel returned in June, and in its fiscal Q1, ended July 31, the company announced customer bookings growth of 73% quarter over quarter, suggesting his return is helping to turn the business around. That said, given its stock's valuation is on par with SentinelOne and the uncertainty with how the turnaround will progress, SentinelOne is the better stock to buy.
