Tesla Costs More Than $350 a Share. Here's Why I'd Still Buy One.

Key Points

  • Tesla shares have fallen more than 20% this year.

  • Buying a single share of Tesla when it's down has historically paid off in the long run.

  • Analysts see flat results for its third-quarter results on Wednesday.

Like the head-turning Roadster it reintroduced last week with some snazzy new performance features, Tesla (NASDAQ: TSLA) shares come with a big price tag. The stock enters this week at $354.72.

Despite the triple-digit price of admission, now could be a good time to buy at least a single share. Even if your broker is open to selling you fractional shares, going with a round share is more than just a cleaner transaction. It provides you with full voting power and the ability to transfer to a brokerage account, which may not allow fractional purchases.

Missed AI’s "Act 1"? Act 2 Could Be 15x Bigger. Most investors think they missed the AI boat because they didn't buy Nvidia in 2005. But according to our analysts, we’re only at the end of "Act 1"—the R&D phase. "Act 2" is the global rollout. Continue »

It can fly

There's a lot going for Tesla stock these days. A surge in gas prices is boosting the value proposition of electric vehicles, reversing the bearish narrative that began for U.S. drivers in the fall of last year after federal tax credits of up to $7,500 for new purchases or leases expired.

The high-end Roadster is just one of the many new offerings coming from the world's most valuable automaker by market cap. Tesla's Optimus humanoid robots, improvements in its autonomous driving platform, and a push into commercial vehicles leave analysts expecting annual revenue to nearly double in the next three years.

Sticking the landing

A lot can also go wrong. Profitability was cut in half in its previous quarter. Analysts see a much smaller decline on the bottom line when it reports third-quarter results later this week, but it still needs to turn that around.

The top line has recovered quickly from last year's fourth-quarter decline, bringing us to today's opportunity. The shares are down 21% this year. The fundamentals are holding up better. Even as we head into Wednesday afternoon's financial update, analysts are bracing for flat sales. This is actually a good thing, since last year's third quarter was when sales spiked as U.S. buyers scrambled to get their orders in before the federal tax credit expired.

Tesla is out of favor with investors this year. Volatility has always been part of this story, but historically, as with its new Roadster Rocket, it's just a matter of time before it lifts off the ground.

Missed AI’s "Act 1"? Act 2 Could Be 14x Bigger

Most investors think they missed the AI boat because they didn't buy Nvidia in 2005.

But according to our analysts, we’re only at the end of "Act 1"—the R&D phase. "Act 2" is the global rollout, a massive technology build-out that Google’s CEO says could be more profound than fire or electricity.

While everyone watches the chip designers, one "backbone" company provides the critical technology that Nvidia and AMD literally cannot function without. We’ve detailed this under-the-radar player in our new AI Playbook.

Netflix earnings land tonight: the $70 line that decides whether the AI rebound has legsNetflix reports Q3 after the US close on October 20 with the stock at $69.85 (-0.96%), just below the $70 round number and far from its 52-week high of $124.86. Consensus looks for revenue near $12.87bn (+12%), EPS around $0.82 and a 33.2% operating margin, while options imply an 8.4% one-day move. With the Nasdaq up 1.11% and the SOX up 1.61% after an eight-day slide, the result is the first real test of the AI-led rebound. Here are the numbers, the $65 / $70 / $75 levels and the three checks that matter.

Dollar presses 102 as the 10-year yield sits at 5.14% — and October hike odds are only 17%The dollar index closed at 101.99 (+0.20%) on Monday after briefly topping 102.07, while the 10-year Treasury yield rose to 5.14% and the 2-year hit 4.774% — yet futures price only about a 17% chance of a hike at the October 27-28 FOMC, versus roughly 90% for December. The driver is a global bond selloff, not a Fed repricing: France's 10-year OAT jumped to 4.84% ~ 4.94% and the OAT-Bund spread widened to 140 ~ 146bp. Here are the levels, the cross-asset read-through and what to watch.
