An analyst's rather bullish initiation of coverage shone a light on Lexicon Pharmaceuticals (NASDAQ: LXRX) stock on Monday. Investors clearly took notice of this, as they piled into the company's stock to send it to a gain of nearly 6% on the day.

A heartening evaluation

Before market open, Cantor Fitzgerald prognosticator Steve Seedhouse flagged Lexicon as an overweight (buy, in other words) at a price target of $8 per share. That's more than four times the stock's current level of $1.90.

Missed AI’s "Act 1"? Act 2 Could Be 15x Bigger. Most investors think they missed the AI boat because they didn't buy Nvidia in 2005. But according to our analysts, we’re only at the end of "Act 1"—the R&D phase. "Act 2" is the global rollout. Continue »

According to reports, in his inaugural Lexicon analysis, Seedhouse waxed bullish about the company's progress toward earning a new indication for sotagliflozin.

The drug, which has Food and Drug Administration (FDA) approval to treat heart failure and related risks under the brand name Inpefa, is currently being developed for other indications, including hypertrophic cardiomyopathy (HCM; thickening of the heart muscle). Lexicon is currently in late-stage development for this effort.

Positive indications

Seedhouse wrote in his Lexicon take that sotagliflozin works via a different mechanism than other drugs treating HCM. As such, if approved, it will complement instead of compete with them. Heart afflictions are common ailments in this country and around the world, so the potential for the drug is considerable if it wins regulatory green lights for this indication.

That said, no drug is guaranteed approval, no matter how it might have performed in the past. Lexicon is an attractive stock, to be sure, but like any small pharmaceutical and biotech company, its equity carries a higher-than-average degree of risk.

Nvidia's $150 billion buyback landed — and the AI sector fell anyway. That's the signal worth tradingNvidia closed up 1.68% at $228.86 on 28 September after announcing a $150 billion share repurchase authorisation, the largest single corporate buyback on record, while the rest of the AI complex sold off: AMD -3.6%, Micron -2.6%, Meta -4.8% and the Philadelphia Semiconductor Index -1.61%. The divergence is not noise. Capital is rotating toward cash-flow certainty, not abandoning the AI theme. With Micron reporting after the close on 30 September, here is what the split means.

The 30-year Treasury just hit a 22-year high — and the bond market is not pricing the Fed, it is pricing the deficitThe 30-year Treasury yield closed at 5.56% on 28 September, the highest since June 2004, while the 10-year reached 5.24% and the 20-year 5.60%. The curve has steepened roughly 30bp in eight sessions even as October hike odds sit at 70.3%. That gap is the story: the long end is repricing fiscal and inflation risk, not policy. With PCE on Wednesday and payrolls on Friday, here is what the long end is really saying.
