One of the most important days of the year is coming for Social Security beneficiaries. On Oct. 14, 2026, retirees and others collecting Social Security will find out how much their Social Security cost-of-living adjustment (COLA) will be for 2027.

Here's why this news is coming in October, along with some details on why it is so important to seniors.

This major Social Security news will be released once the data becomes available

The reason Oct. 14 is such an important date for Social Security is that the Social Security Administration (SSA) must wait until then to announce the COLA. That is when the data used to calculate the increase in benefits will become available.

Cost-of-living adjustments occur most years and increase monthly Social Security checks. COLAs are necessary because otherwise benefits would lose buying power due to inflation. The COLA is calculated based on changes to the Consumer Price Index for Urban Wage Earners and Clerical Workers (CPI-W). Specifically, under the formula, the percentage increase in monthly benefits is based on third-quarter CPI-W data showing year-over-year price increases.

The Bureau of Labor Statistics determines the cost of a basket of goods and services, and this cost information is compiled to create the CPI-W. It takes time to gather this data, though, so the key third-quarter information won't be available until October. Once it becomes available, the Social Security Administration will alert beneficiaries to how much their checks will increase.

Here are the early COLA projections

While we don't yet know how big the 2027 COLA is going to be, experts have already made some early predictions. Specifically, AARP is projecting a 3.6% cost-of-living-adjustment next year. This would be significantly higher than the 2.8% benefits increase that retirees received this year.

For those making retirement plans for the upcoming year, a 3.6% COLA may seem like good news, since it means a larger benefits bump. However, it's important to remember that this is directly based on an inflation measure, so if the October announcement shows a 3.6% increase, that is only because prices have risen by that much.

Retirees tend to have other income sources, such as a 401(k) or an IRA, that don't have inflation adjustments built in. That means retirees could still find themselves losing buying power across their total income sources. So, a larger raise is not necessarily something to shoot for.

The announcement is coming in under a month now, so seniors will soon find out their exact raise with no more estimates needed. Seniors should watch the news on Oct. 14, both to understand what their COLA will look like and to get an idea of the inflation they'll likely face as they move into 2027.
