China Reportedly Halts IPOs and Share Sales: Is the AI Trade Cracking?

Source Beincrypto

China has reportedly told banks to pause initial public offerings (IPOs) and large share sales. The CSI 300, mainland China’s benchmark index, fell 8.5% in October, its worst month in over a decade.

Data cited by the FT shows 2026 IPO volume topped 292 billion yuan ($44 billion), the highest since 2023. The pause threatens that revival.

Can Beijing Stop the Slide as China Halts IPOs?

The China Securities Regulatory Commission (CSRC) delivered the pause as window guidance, meaning informal instructions, three sources told the FT. The CSRC did not immediately respond to a request for comment. Large sales by existing shareholders are also on hold until conditions stabilize.

Monday’s stabilization measures include cutting the rate on a relending facility for share buybacks to 1% from 1.25%.

Tuesday’s reaction was mixed, with the CSI 300 down 0.2% and the tech-focused Star 50 down 3.8%.

Capital Economics’ Asia-Pacific markets head doubts the measures can deliver a lasting turnaround alone.

Does China’s Slump Signal Trouble for the Global AI Trade?

Xiao Yuanqi, vice head of China’s National Financial Regulatory Administration, warned about overconcentration in artificial intelligence (AI) on Tuesday. He said global capital is crowding into the sector.

The S&P 500 is up 10% this year. However, Wall Street’s late-October tech selloff erased roughly $2 trillion from the Nasdaq-100 after major tech earnings detailed AI spending.

Jason Lui, head of Asia-Pacific equity and derivative strategy at BNP Paribas, sees medium-term entry points in mainland-listed A shares. However, he said the steps may not spark an immediate reversal in sentiment like September 2024’s.

The pause also limits how Chinese companies raise capital, a drag the FT says threatens dealmaking.

The read-across to Wall Street runs through AI sentiment, which the FT lists among several pressures. It would weaken if US earnings keep supporting AI spending.

Still, hedge funds sold AI stocks for five straight days in October, Goldman Sachs data shows. If that selling resumes, China’s slump could read as an early signal rather than an outlier.
