Ethereum is planning a series of bold technological upgrades through the year 2030.
Starting in 2027, each new planned upgrade will be bigger in scope than The Merge, which took place in 2022.
While the concept of a "cryptographic world computer" is impressive, investors may not be willing to pay a premium for complex tech upgrades.
Ethereum (CRYPTO: ETH) co-founder Vitalik Buterin recently unveiled a brand-new vision of where the Layer 1 blockchain network will be by the year 2030. Due to new technological upgrades on the way, Buterin says, Ethereum will look very different than it does now.
In fact, Buterin even questions whether Ethereum should be called a "blockchain" by 2030. At that point, he says, it will be a super-powerful "cryptographic world computer." So, what does that mean for the future price of Ethereum?
Missed Nvidia in 2009? This Rare Signal Is Flashing Again. In 2009, a "Double Down" signal flashed for a little-known chipmaker called Nvidia. For the first time in years, that same "Total Conviction" signal is flashing for a company 1/100th the size of Nvidia. Continue »
From Buterin's perspective, the next few years will be pivotal for Ethereum's future development. In fact, he suggests that the blockchain upgrade (codenamed "Hegota") scheduled for next year will be the last "normal" upgrade of the blockchain. After that, he says, there will be a series of highly complex upgrades that include improvements made to efficiency, throughput capacity, user privacy, and quantum security.

In fact, Buterin suggests that each of these new upgrades will be technologically more complex and more important than the Merge, which took place in 2022. The much-ballyhooed Merge transformed Ethereum from a proof-of-work blockchain to a proof-of-stake blockchain. At the time, the difficulty level of carrying out that transformation was compared to the complexity of swapping out the engine of a plane while in mid-flight.
So Buterin obviously has very ambitious plans for Ethereum ahead. The combination of traditional blockchain design and modern cryptography will yield powerful new properties for Ethereum's users. As Buterin points out, the goal is to combine "core Satoshian ideas" (i.e., principles from Satoshi Nakamoto, the pseudonymous creator of Bitcoin (CRYPTO: BTC) in 2008) with new, powerful cryptographic computing power.
It's a big idea, and surely one that will lead to rapid gains in the price of Ethereum, right? Maybe. But take a look at what happened after the Merge in 2022. The price of Ethereum increased from $1,472 on Sept. 15, 2022 to $2,700 on Oct. 6, 2026. In a period of slightly more than four years, Ethereum nearly doubled in value. That works out to an annual return of 15%-20%.
Not bad. But not exactly earth-shattering, either. It's roughly the return that you would expect from an established, industry-leading tech stock. But Ethereum is not growing anywhere near as fast as a top AI stock. Or, for that matter, a top quantum computing stock.
So keep your expectations in check. It's easy to get caught up in the hoopla around new technological upgrades. But, as we've seen from Ethereum's previous tech upgrade, investors are not necessarily willing to pay a premium for better technology. What matters are the final results, as measured by revenue, users, and overall market share.
