Investors often weigh the stability of an industrial giant against the growth potential of a specialized materials leader. Choosing between Corning (NYSE:GLW) and Honeywell International (NASDAQ:HON) requires balancing two very different business models.

Corning provides the literal glass and fiber backbone for modern electronics and data centers. Honeywell serves as a massive industrial conglomerate managing everything from airplane cockpits to smart building systems. Both companies are essential to global infrastructure but offer distinct risk and reward profiles.

The case for Corning

Corning designs and manufactures specialized glass and optical-physics products. It operates as a vital link for tech stocks by supplying optical fiber to Verizon and durable cover glass to Apple (NASDAQ:AAPL). The company also partners with Amazon (NASDAQ:AMZN), Nvidia (NASDAQ:NVDA), and Qualcomm (NASDAQ:QCOM) to support artificial intelligence and data center architectures.

Customer concentration like this adds a layer of risk to the business, particularly in the display and automotive segments. In its latest annual report, filed for FY 2025, the company reported revenue of nearly $15.6 billion. This represented revenue growth of approximately 19.1% compared to the prior year. Net income reached roughly $1.6 billion, resulting in a net margin of close to 10.2% for the period.

As of its December 2025 balance sheet, the debt-to-equity ratio was approximately 0.9x. This indicates the company holds roughly $0.90 of debt for every dollar of shareholder equity. The current ratio stands at 1.6x, meaning it has $1.60 in current assets for every dollar of short-term liabilities. Corning generated nearly $1.4 billion in free cash flow, which is the cash remaining after paying for operations and equipment.

The case for Honeywell International

Honeywell International operates as a diversified industrial technology company. It manages four primary segments, including aerospace technologies, industrial automation, and building automation. The company maintains a significant strategic agreement with Bombardier (OTC:BDRBF) for propulsion and avionics systems. Honeywell is also refining its portfolio by divesting its warehouse and workflow solutions business to focus on higher-growth areas.

In its latest annual report, filed for FY 2025, Honeywell reported revenue of approximately $37.4 billion. This figure reflected revenue growth of nearly 7.8% over the previous fiscal year. The company achieved a net income of roughly $4.7 billion for the year. This resulted in a net margin of approximately 12.6%, which measures the portion of sales remaining after all expenses are paid.

As of its December 2025 balance sheet, the debt-to-equity ratio was roughly 2.2x. This indicates that the company's debts are more than double the company's shareholder equity. The current ratio is approximately 1.3x, which measures a company's ability to cover its short-term obligations. Honeywell generated close to $5.4 billion in free cash flow, providing significant capital for dividends and acquisitions.

Risk profile comparison

Corning faces risks related to its highly concentrated customer base. A small number of end customers account for more than half of sales in its display and automotive segments. The company also deals with supply chain sensitivities regarding raw materials and energy costs. Geopolitical risks are prominent due to its manufacturing footprint in the Asia Pacific region, which could be impacted by trade policies or tariffs.

Honeywell faces financial exposure from ongoing litigation, such as matters involving Flexjet. The company is currently managing several operational divestitures, which creates execution risk during the portfolio realignment process. Cybersecurity and regulatory compliance also remain critical, especially under rigorous government contracts. Additionally, segments like commercial aviation are subject to cyclicality and fluctuations in broader economic demand.

Valuation comparison

Honeywell looks cheaper on most metrics, with a lower Forward P/E and a significantly lower P/S ratio.

Which stock would I buy in 2026?

Corning got its start manufacturing glass for light bulbs, railroad signals, and tableware. Today, its products have a more technology-oriented focus, most notably optical fiber for data transmission. It also makes laboratory products and glass used in electronic device displays. That positions Corning to benefit from the continuing expansion of artificial intelligence, cloud computing, data centers, and 5G telecommunications.

But that doesn't make its prospects unbreakable. Corning depends heavily on a relatively small number of large customers, and demand from the technology sector can be cyclical. The company also faces supply chain risks and carries significant debt relative to its shareholders' equity.

Honeywell, meanwhile, produces equipment and software serving four primary markets: aviation, building automation, industrial automation, and energy and sustainability solutions. Its aviation business in particular has provided steady growth and recurring demand. However, aerospace is also cyclical, and Honeywell faces litigation and regulatory risks.

Corning offers greater upside potential from AI infrastructure and the growing demand for optical connectivity, but that opportunity comes with greater risk. Honeywell is far from a perfect investment, but it is the steadier and more defensive choice. Personally, I have considerable confidence in the near-term growth of AI and data-center infrastructure, so Corning is where I would allocate a small, speculative portion of my portfolio.
