Stock Market Today, Sept. 29: Oracle's Fusion Claw Helps it Claw Back Losses

Source Motley_fool

Oracle (NYSE:ORCL), an enterprise software and AI infrastructure leader, closed at $137.79, up 3.91%. The stock fell last week as fears of potential data center delays triggered a pullback. However, today it erased some of those losses with its release of Fusion Claw, an agentic AI offering that promises to handle complex workflows at scale.

Trading volume reached 44.7 million shares, coming in about 35% above its three-month average of 33.1 million shares.

How the markets moved today

S&P 500 (SNPINDEX:^GSPC) closed at 7,671, down 0.17%, while the Nasdaq Composite (NASDAQINDEX:^IXIC) finished at 26,798, down 0.09%. Among software peers, Salesforce closed at $225.31, down 0.86%, and SAP ended at $210.85, up 0.74%, showing mixed trading across the group.

What this means for investors

There were two big drivers for Oracle's rebound today: the launch of Fusion Claw and news that OpenAI's revenue is growing rapidly. The fates of OpenAI and Oracle have been closely tied since they signed a $300 billion five-year cloud deal last year. To put it simply, Oracle is extremely reliant on OpenAI's success.

Fusion Claw brings 25 agentic artificial intelligence (AI) applications that can execute complex specialist work at scale, and Oracle argues it will offer measurable value for businesses. The firm also launched two financial crime compliance tools.

Both pieces of news go some way toward reassuring investors who may be jittery about high levels of AI spending and Oracle's ability to deliver. Last week, it issued a force majeure notice to the developer of its New Mexico data center, raising questions about the risk of non-completion. Today brought two possible sources of revenue into focus, boosting the stock. Investors will be watching for further whispers of data center delays as well as more concrete progress on revenue.
