For anyone who has invested in Space Exploration Technologies (NASDAQ: SPCX) since its June 12 initial public offering (IPO), it's been quite the roller-coaster ride. Shares opened to the public at $150 and since traded as high as $225.64 and as low as $104.83 per share.

As of the closing price of Sept. 18, shares are almost right back where they started at $152.71. For anyone who hasn't invested yet or who has but may be considering adding more shares, there are likely to be more wild price swings for the foreseeable future. SpaceX is unprofitable and needs to spend heavily to build out a new wave of artificial intelligence (AI) infrastructure in space.

Missed AI’s "Act 1"? Act 2 Could Be 15x Bigger. Most investors think they missed the AI boat because they didn't buy Nvidia in 2005. But according to our analysts, we’re only at the end of "Act 1"—the R&D phase. "Act 2" is the global rollout. Continue »

That said, by September 2027, analysts appear generally bullish on where the SpaceX stock price could be trading.

What a $3,000 investment in SpaceX could be worth

Price targets aren't guarantees, and they shouldn't be the full deciding factor for whether to invest in a company. Rather, they can help an investor decide whether the potential rewards outweigh the risks.

With that in mind, the median one-year price target among the 41 analysts covering the company is $212, according to CNN. From the Sept. 18 closing price of $152.71, that would represent a gain of 38.8% by SpaceX investors in September 2027.

A $3,000 investment at the Sept. 18 closing price would equal more than 19 shares through fractional investing. So, if the SpaceX stock price were to reach $212 by September 2027, that $3,000 investment would be worth approximately $4,163.

To expand on that a little further for a broader outlook, we can also look at the bear case through the group's lowest price target of $75. If the SpaceX stock price were to sink that low, that $3,000 would essentially be halved to $1,473. I'll skip running these hypothetical examples against the highest price target, $800, which would likely take SpaceX years to hit rather than occur in the next 12 months.

Is SpaceX worth an investment consideration?

A more conservative investor may want to consider passing on owning shares of SpaceX for the time being. For the second quarter of 2026, the company reported a net loss of $541 million, better than the $1 billion loss in the prior-year period, but still a loss. Also, SpaceX is spending heavily, particularly on its AI division, which accounted for $15.8 billion of the $18.3 billion in capital expenditures for the second quarter of 2026.

For more aggressive investors who are prepared to handle the volatility and can give SpaceX more time to accomplish its goals, that median forecast gain of 38.8% by September 2027 could pale in comparison to the long-term gains the company could offer, which that $800 price target mentioned earlier is likely reflecting. SpaceX is giving an early preview of the revenue it could generate by establishing AI infrastructure through deals in which Anthropic and Alphabet rent out compute capacity from its data centers, with the two contracts combined valued at $26 billion annually.

These types of deals could extend even further for SpaceX as it establishes AI infrastructure in space, having previously submitted plans to launch more than 1 million satellites to serve as space-based data centers, with initial launches expected in 2028. SpaceX just needs to execute to make that a reality. Shareholders need to give the company time to make it happen and be prepared for any potential missteps along the way.
