Circle’s $5B USDC mint puts stablecoin demand back in focus

Source Cryptopolitan

Circle minted around $5 billion worth of USDC over the past week, according to on-chain data. This comes in when the demand for dollar-backed stablecoins continues to grow. The surge in issuance has caught traders’ attention because large USDC mints can signal that more liquidity is preparing to enter crypto markets.

However, the process of gross minting does not necessarily imply that $5 billion worth of new dollars instantly went into circulation. In fact, Circle uses pre-mint addresses on Solana, where USDC can be created and kept before being allowed into circulation. In any event, the process occurs against the backdrop of growth in the overall stablecoin market, meaning more dollar-based liquidity will be circulating in the crypto scene.

A week of heavy issuance against a rising supply

Lookonchain estimated that Circle’s total issuance for the week stood at $5 billion. The tracker noted on August 21 that Circle and Tether together had minted $3 billion in stablecoin within only 48 hours, indicating both major issuers were active at the same time.

The net increase in supply has been lower than the gross issuance. The market cap of USDC is around US$73.88 billion, which is an increase of 2.67% in seven days, according to DefiLlama. The total market cap of stablecoins is approximately US$303.72 billion, which reflects an increase of US$2.83 billion within a week. The leader of the industry is Tether’s USDT with a market cap of US$183.17 billion and around 60% of this market, while USDC has a comfortable second position.

Why traders treat mints as a demand signal

In terms of new issuance, one must note that it is not equivalent to new value, something that Cryptopolitan noted in previous articles regarding Circle and its minting activity on Solana. Circle Mint changes fiat deposits to USDC to ensure a 1:1 exchange rate. In terms of redemptions, Circle ensures that this process is reversed.

The process of minting can be seen in terms of on-chain dollar demand. USDC is used by market participants to settle transactions, secure loans and derivatives, and transfer resources. Increased minting is an indication of market players planning to make use of more stablecoin liquidity and this becomes even more relevant when it is combined with an increase in demand and trading.

The total USDC adjusted transaction volume was $222.44 billion from August 19 through August 25, a drop of 0.4% from $223.35 billion recorded in the previous week. Total transaction count, on the other hand, has increased by a whopping 31.5% from 14.27 million to 18.77 million, according to data shared by Visa Onchain Analytics via Allium. This means that approximately the same dollar amount traveled through a larger number of transactions as compared to last week.

The global angle sits in the FX plumbing

Demand for stablecoins has expanded beyond typical crypto exchange activity. According to research completed by Iñaki Aldasoro, Paula Beltran, and Federico Grinberg in March 2026, more than 70% of the fiat-to-stablecoin transactions studied came from currencies other than the US dollar, thus forming a parallel crypto-foreign exchange market.

The study has found that a 1% rise in net inflow of stablecoin creates a difference of approximately 40 basis points between purchasing dollars via stablecoin or interbank exchange rate, thereby weakening the local currency and causing an increase in the US dollar premium in synthetic funding markets.

Stablecoins are “an emerging segment of global currency markets” with direct implications for financial stability. — Iñaki Aldasoro, Paula Beltran and Federico Grinberg

This explains why the continuous expansion of stablecoins should be perceived as beyond a mere aspect of the cryptocurrency landscape. The rise of dollar-linked coins outside the US implies that the flow of these currencies influences the local foreign exchange market and dollar financing conditions.

Circle’s institutional footing behind the flows

The rise in minting coincides with Circle’s expansion into the regulated finance sector. In its Q2 earnings report released on August 5, the company announced a total circulation of $73.3 billion worth of USDC at the end of the quarter, a rise of 19% year-on-year. Additionally, Circle has reported a quarterly on-chain transaction volume of $14.8 trillion, a rise of 151%. The total revenue and net reserve income of Circle were reported at $701 million.

Circle has earned the support of OCC to open Circle National Trust as well as a separate New York limited-purpose trust company. The company’s Arc blockchain will officially go live on September 16.

USDC is still redeemable at the rate of one dollar for one USDC. It is backed by highly liquid cash and cash-equivalent assets, such as short-term US Treasury bonds and overnight Treasury repurchase agreements. Circle publishes information regarding reserves and minting and burning activity on a weekly basis, with external auditor verification carried out once a month.
