Japan’s GDP grows 0.3% QoQ in Q2 2026 vs 0.5% expected
The Japanese economy expanded 0.3% over the quarter in the second quarter (Q2) of 2026, the preliminary report published by the Cabinet Office showed on Monday. This reading followed a 0.5% growth recorded in Q1 and missed market expectations of a 0.5% expansion.
On an annualized basis, Japan’s Gross Domestic Product (GDP) grew 1.1%, compared with forecasts of 2.0% and the first quarter’s reading of 1.8% growth.

The country’s central bank then has to put up interest rates to combat the inflation with the side effect of attracting more capital inflows from global investors, thus helping the local currency appreciate.
