New Zealand Dollar holds steady as US Dollar retreats

NZD/USD trades around 0.5665 on Friday at the time of writing, virtually unchanged on the day, as the New Zealand Dollar (NZD) struggles to capitalize on a moderate decline in the US Dollar (USD). The Greenback comes under some selling pressure despite elevated US Treasury yields, while investors assess mixed US economic data and geopolitical developments.
The US Dollar Index (DXY), which tracks the Greenback against a basket of six major currencies, declines 0.22% on the day to trade around 101.00 after reaching 101.40 on Thursday, its highest level in nearly two months. Meanwhile, the benchmark 10-year US Treasury yield holds near 5.19%, slightly below Thursday's peak of 5.22%.
The latest US economic data provide mixed signals. The final University of Michigan (UoM) Consumer Sentiment Index stands at 48.1 in September, up from the preliminary estimate of 47.6 and above expectations of 47.8. However, the reading remains below the 51.7 recorded in August, highlighting a deterioration in household confidence.
At the same time, inflation expectations remain elevated. The one-year measure stands at 4.6%, up from 4% in August, while the five-year inflation expectation holds at 3.4%, compared with 3.3% previously. Other US data offer a more encouraging picture. Core Durable Goods Orders beat expectations in August, while July's figures were revised higher, suggesting that business spending remains resilient despite signs of weakening consumer sentiment.
Geopolitical developments also remain in focus. Reports of a potential phased agreement between the United States (US) and Iran provide some sentiment relief, although harsh comments from officials on both sides keep the risk of renewed escalation alive.
Meanwhile, attention turns to relations between Washington and Beijing following Chinese President Xi Jinping's visit to the United States. US President Donald Trump said he had a “very productive” meeting with Xi, while the Chinese leader described his trip as successful and expressed optimism about the future of US-China relations.
Despite Friday's pullback in the US Dollar, NZD/USD remains broadly stable around 0.5665, suggesting that the Kiwi is struggling to attract significant demand. Elevated US Treasury yields and lingering geopolitical uncertainty appear to offset some of the support provided by the softer Greenback.
