Wave: 3 Key Takeaways for Long-Term Investors

Key Points

  • Wave aligned with the FDA on a single trial for WVE-006.

  • Cash and marketable securities reached $431 million to fund operations into 2028.

  • GSK selected an siRNA candidate, triggering a $12 million milestone payment.

On its third-quarter 2026 earnings call, held on Oct. 27, 2026, Wave (NASDAQ:WVE) announced advancing clinical momentum across its RNA (ribonucleic acid) treatment portfolio. The biotechnology business is validating its drug delivery platform through human trial data while securing streamlined regulatory pathways. This combination of platform proof and multiyear cash coverage reduces financial risk for shareholders as major clinical readouts approach.

Three things management said stand out.

1. Obesity Candidate WVE-007 Cuts Fat Without Loss of Muscle

Wave is advancing WVE-007, an siRNA (small interfering RNA, a technology that silences specific disease-causing genes) candidate targeting obesity by promoting fat loss while preserving lean tissue. Weight-loss treatments like GLP-1s (glucagon-like peptide-1 receptor agonists) make patients shed muscle alongside fat, but Wave's therapy doesn't. That distinction creates opportunities across monotherapy, combination care, and post-treatment maintenance.

WVE-007 offers a distinct therapeutic approach from incretins by driving fat loss without muscle loss.
-- Paul Bolno, President and Chief Executive Officer

2. FDA Agreement Clears a Single Registrational Trial for WVE-006

Following discussions with the FDA (U.S. Food and Drug Administration), Wave aligned on a single two-year registrational trial for WVE-006 in AATD (alpha-1 antitrypsin deficiency, a genetic condition causing lung and liver damage). The trial includes a one-year interim analysis that could support accelerated regulatory approval without requiring a separate confirmatory study.

We believe this single trial design, without the need for a separate confirmatory study, offers an efficient path for full approval, bringing WVE-006 to patients in need as quickly as possible.
-- Chris Wright, Chief Medical Officer

3. Balance Sheet Strength and Partner Selection Support Long-Term Growth

Collaboration partner GSK (GlaxoSmithKline) selected a development candidate from Wave's platform, triggering a $12 million milestone payment to the company. That milestone adds to a substantial cash position that funds business operations well into 2028.

We ended the third quarter with $431 million in cash equivalents, and marketable securities, which we expect to be sufficient to fund operations into the third quarter of 2028.
-- Kyle Moran, Chief Financial Officer

Looking Ahead

Clinical trials are advancing on schedule, and management isn't hiding its optimism. Proprietary RNA chemistry gives Wave a structural advantage in gene targeting, while GSK milestone payments validate the platform. Management is watching clinical readouts across its obesity and liver disease programs, focusing on execution.

Our strong execution and progress throughout the year leave us well-positioned to unlock value across our pipeline.
-- Paul Bolno, President and Chief Executive Officer

Long-term value depends on converting platform capabilities into commercial therapies. Wave continues using human genetics data to lower trial risks across its portfolio.

At Wave, we are harnessing the convergence of deep genetic insights with our proprietary chemistry to rapidly advance a pipeline of transformational RNA medicines.
-- Paul Bolno, President and Chief Executive Officer
