Net sales reached $209 million in the fourth quarter of 2026.
Insteel estimates a 1.3 million ton domestic wire rod deficit.
Management allocated $20 million to expand engineered structural mesh capacity.
On its fourth quarter of 2026 earnings call, held on Oct. 22, 2026, Insteel (NYSE:IIIN) announced net sales, or total revenue, of $209 million for the period. Rising steel tariffs and domestic raw material shortages pressed gross margin, the percentage of revenue left after direct product costs, down to 10%.
Three things management said stand out.
U.S. steel tariffs capped Canadian imports and created a severe domestic shortfall of steel wire rod, the hot-rolled steel coil used as raw material for wire products. Insteel bought imported rod from overseas suppliers to keep plants running, forcing seven price increases to offset elevated costs.
By our calculation, there is a supply deficit of steel wire rod produced in the U.S. of approximately 1.3 million tons.

Management is directing $20 million of its $30 million annual capital budget toward expanding production of engineered structural mesh, a custom-welded steel grid that reinforces concrete slabs. Expanding mesh capacity protects customer delivery timelines and supports market share gains in nonresidential construction.
Our largest investment approximating $20 million is focused on expanding our engineered structural mesh capacity with the addition of a new production line at an existing facility.
-- H. Woltz, President and Chief Executive Officer
Insteel is closing its Upper Sandusky, Ohio facility to eliminate excess unit conversion costs, the operational expense to transform raw steel into finished wire. The consolidation shifts production to existing plants with excess capacity without sacrificing total output.
The plant is simply in the wrong location to fit well into Insteel's manufacturing footprint and other Insteel facilities have ample excess capacity.
-- H. Woltz, President and Chief Executive Officer
Data center construction and highway spending support volume, while broader commercial construction shows early recovery signs.
Concerning private nonresidential construction markets, we believe the data center momentum will continue through 2027, and we are evaluating many non data center projects which gives us confidence we will see more well-rounded demand in broader market segments than in 2026.
-- H. Woltz, President and Chief Executive Officer
A nationwide plant network and clean balance sheet position the company to manage trade policy volatility.
Regardless of developments in these areas, we are well positioned to pursue growth related activities both organic and through acquisition and actions to optimize our costs.
