On its third-quarter 2026 earnings call, held on Oct. 20, 2026, Hancock Whitney (NASDAQ:HWC) announced a 17% year-over-year increase in adjusted earnings per share (EPS). Organic balance sheet expansion and steady credit quality underscore the bank's core profitability. Three takeaways from management stand out for long-term shareholders.

1. Net New Banker Hires Drive Most Recent Loan Growth

Commercial banks rely on experienced relationship managers to win business from local rivals. Adding productive talent directly accelerates lending without forcing the bank to compromise on underwriting standards.

When we look at the overall contribution of the new bankers we've added since the beginning of last year, their contribution is a whopping 55% of year-to-date loan growth in 2026 and 77% of Q3.
-- John Hairston, President and CEO

2. Reinvesting Bond Cash Flows Expands Net Interest Margin

Higher interest rates allow banks to replace low-yielding legacy investments with higher-earning assets. This continuous turnover creates a structural tailwind for net interest income, which is the profit earned from lending and investing.

For example, in the third quarter, we're looking at least $300 million of principal cash flow coming off at well below 4%, and the assumption is that we'll be able to reinvest that north of 5.5%.
-- Mike Achary, CFO

3. Share Repurchases Pause to Maintain Core Capital Ratios

Capital discipline requires balancing share repurchases against balance sheet protection when rising market interest rates reduce tangible common equity (TCE, the ratio of core equity to tangible assets). Management chose to protect core equity reserves over continuing share buybacks.

The step-back is really just related to where longer-term rates have gone and certainly cognizant of where our TCE is at 8.05.
-- Mike Achary, CFO

Looking Ahead

Core loan and deposit growth keep moving forward, and management isn't hiding its optimism. Regional commercial expansion, conservative underwriting, and local market talent give the bank durable advantages for compounding value. Executives are tracking promotional deposit costs and market interest rate movements to maintain pricing discipline across commercial lending.

We maintain confidence in our strategy to grow the balance sheet and enhance our operational efficiency, and we remain optimistic about closing out 2026 with continued growth and profitability.
-- John Hairston, President and CEO

Stabilizing loan returns and building long-term relationship value remain central to the bank's strategic execution.

The notion of consistency, or said a different way, the lack of volatility, really extended to everything.
-- John Hairston, President and CEO
