Dow Jones futures advance as Fed rate hike expectations cool

  • US futures indices rise as NY Fed President Williams signaled no urgency for an October rate increase.
  • US Treasury yields eased after soaring to multi-decade highs during Tuesday's session.
  • Investors await Wednesday’s PCE inflation report and Friday’s September Nonfarm Payrolls release.

Dow Jones futures gain by 0.39% to trade near 51,890 during European hours on Wednesday. Meanwhile, S&P 500 futures advance by 0.23% to trade around 7,750, while Nasdaq 100 futures rise 0.17% to trade near 30,660.

US stock futures advance as expectations for further Federal Reserve (Fed) rate hikes cooled following dovish remarks from New York Fed President John Williams. Williams noted that while an additional rate increase later in the year could prove appropriate if the economy develops as projected, there is "no need for urgency" following the September policy meeting. His comments effectively tempered expectations for an immediate rate increase at the Fed's upcoming October meeting.

Financial markets quickly adjusted to the guidance, with the CME FedWatch Tool showing the probability of an October rate hike dropping sharply to roughly 45%, down from 70.9% just a day prior. Investors are now turning their attention to Wednesday’s Personal Consumption Expenditures (PCE) price index, the Fed's preferred inflation gauge, before shifting focus to Friday's key Nonfarm Payrolls report.

Meanwhile, US Treasury yields pulled back on Wednesday after reaching multi-decade highs during the previous session. On Tuesday, the 30-year Treasury yield surged to 5.62%, its highest level since June 2002, while the 10-year yield touched a fresh 2007 peak near 5.3%. Rising yields heavily burdened Wall Street overnight, dragging major indices lower during regular US trading on Tuesday. The Dow Jones Industrial Average dropped 0.26%, the S&P 500 shed 0.17%, and the Nasdaq Composite declined 0.09%.

Front-end focus as markets eye key US inflation releases

Strategists at ING expect “more front-end action today” ahead of the release of September ADP payrolls and August personal spending and PCE inflation. They note that “core PCE is expected to rise from 0.2% to 0.3% MoM, in line with our forecast,” underscoring the importance of the Fed’s preferred inflation measure. However, ING cautions that, despite the prominence of PCE in the Fed’s reaction function, “markets are likely to place greater weight on the September CPI release in a couple of weeks,” suggesting that today’s data may be more about shaping near-term rate expectations than redefining the broader inflation narrative.

Dow Jones FAQs

The Dow Jones Industrial Average, one of the oldest stock market indices in the world, is compiled of the 30 most traded stocks in the US. The index is price-weighted rather than weighted by capitalization. It is calculated by summing the prices of the constituent stocks and dividing them by a factor, currently 0.152. The index was founded by Charles Dow, who also founded the Wall Street Journal. In later years it has been criticized for not being broadly representative enough because it only tracks 30 conglomerates, unlike broader indices such as the S&P 500.

Many different factors drive the Dow Jones Industrial Average (DJIA). The aggregate performance of the component companies revealed in quarterly company earnings reports is the main one. US and global macroeconomic data also contributes as it impacts on investor sentiment. The level of interest rates, set by the Federal Reserve (Fed), also influences the DJIA as it affects the cost of credit, on which many corporations are heavily reliant. Therefore, inflation can be a major driver as well as other metrics which impact the Fed decisions.

Dow Theory is a method for identifying the primary trend of the stock market developed by Charles Dow. A key step is to compare the direction of the Dow Jones Industrial Average (DJIA) and the Dow Jones Transportation Average (DJTA) and only follow trends where both are moving in the same direction. Volume is a confirmatory criteria. The theory uses elements of peak and trough analysis. Dow’s theory posits three trend phases: accumulation, when smart money starts buying or selling; public participation, when the wider public joins in; and distribution, when the smart money exits.

There are a number of ways to trade the DJIA. One is to use ETFs which allow investors to trade the DJIA as a single security, rather than having to buy shares in all 30 constituent companies. A leading example is the SPDR Dow Jones Industrial Average ETF (DIA). DJIA futures contracts enable traders to speculate on the future value of the index and Options provide the right, but not the obligation, to buy or sell the index at a predetermined price in the future. Mutual funds enable investors to buy a share of a diversified portfolio of DJIA stocks thus providing exposure to the overall index.
