US Dollar Index Price Forecast: Holds gains above 102.00, bullish bias remains intact

Fonte Fxstreet
  • US Dollar Index holds positive ground around 102.25 in Thursday’s early European session.
  • The FOMC voted to keep its benchmark federal funds rate steady in the 3.75% to 4.00% range, as widely expected.
  • Fed’s Warsh offered no clear steer on a December move.

The US Dollar Index (DXY), an index of the value of the US Dollar (USD) measured against a basket of six world currencies, currently trades near 102.25 in the early European trading hours on Thursday. The DXY gathers strength after the Federal Reserve (Fed) held interest rates as expected at its October policy meeting. Traders await the US September Personal Consumption Expenditures (PCE) inflation report, which is due on Friday.

The Federal Open Market Committee (FOMC) voted 10-2 to leave its benchmark federal funds rate unchanged in a range of 3.75% to 4%. Governor Lisa Cook and Cleveland Fed President Beth Hammack dissented, preferring to hike rates by 25 basis points (bps).

Policymakers stated that they hoped incoming data would help inform their next decision. Traders are pricing in an 83.3% probability of a hike in December, according to the CME FedWatch tool.

However, Fed Chairman Kevin Warsh's press conference might cap the upside for the DXY. During the press conference, Warsh did not offer guidance on the outlook but acknowledged the central bank had not achieved price stability. "We're working on it," Warsh said.

"Warsh's silence on further rate hikes was interpreted as dovish, or not hawkish enough," said Carol Kong, a currency strategist at Commonwealth Bank of Australia. "Some market participants might have expected him to pair the on-hold decision with a little bit of guidance on the December meeting, but he didn't do that,” Carol added.

Dollar support persists as Fed pause keeps December hike in play

Analysts at MUFG/BTMU note that the Fed left the fed funds rate unchanged at "3.75–4.00%", delivering a widely anticipated pause following September’s hike, though the decision was not unanimous, with "two dissents in favour of another rate increase." They highlight that Fed Chair Warsh "reiterated the Fed’s commitment to returning inflation to 2%" and underscored "the continued strength of the US economy," reinforcing expectations that policy tightening may not be complete. MUFG/BTMU add that markets "continue to price around an 87% probability of a December rate hike," while Warsh also flagged a structural shift in the policy calendar, indicating that the Fed will "only vote in seven policy meetings in 2027 and six in 2028, down from eight currently."

Warsh underscores unwavering 2% inflation goal, keeping Dollar bulls engaged

Warsh’s press conference tone is firmly hawkish, with the 7/10 FXS Speechtracker score in line with the established baseline, underscoring continuity rather than a regime shift. By stressing that “ensuring price stability is not about a fixed date on a calendar” and highlighting “new monetary medicine” plus September’s removal of accommodation, Warsh signals a data-dependent but resolute path toward quashing inflation and delivering the 2% PCE target. Confidence in inflation expectations “going the right way” and in the effectiveness of policy, even amid an unsettled global backdrop, reinforces a steady, hawkish bias supportive of the Dollar.

The FXS Fed Sentiment Index jumped by +14.39 points to 141.89, pushing deeper into hawkish territory well above the neutral 100 threshold and confirming the speech’s tightening lean. This elevated index level, aligned with the unchanged 7/10 FXS Speechtracker score, suggests markets should continue to price a firm anti-inflation stance, with implications for higher U.S. yields and a constructive backdrop for the Dollar against the Euro and Yen.

Chart Analysis Dollar Index Spot

Technical Analysis: Dollar Index Spot retains a constructive outlook above the 100-day SMA

In the daily chart, Dollar Index Spot maintains a bullish near-term bias as it holds above both the 100-day simple moving average (SMA) and the Bollinger Bands’ middle line. Price action is pressing into the upper half of the Bollinger envelope, with the upper band acting as the immediate cap, while the Relative Strength Index (14) at about 60 stays in constructive territory without yet signaling overbought conditions.

On the topside, the initial resistance level is aligned with the upper boundary of Bollinger band at 102.60, en route to the October 14 high of 102.94. A clear daily close above this barrier would open room for the March 27, 2025, high of 104.71.

On the downside, the first support level emerges at the Bollinger middle band around 102.05, followed by the lower limit of the Bollinger band near 101.50 and the 100-day SMA at 100.65. Any follow-through selling below this level could expose the 100.00 psychological level.

US Dollar FAQs

The US Dollar (USD) is the official currency of the United States of America, and the ‘de facto’ currency of a significant number of other countries where it is found in circulation alongside local notes. It is the most heavily traded currency in the world, accounting for over 88% of all global foreign exchange turnover, or an average of $6.6 trillion in transactions per day, according to data from 2022. Following the second world war, the USD took over from the British Pound as the world’s reserve currency. For most of its history, the US Dollar was backed by Gold, until the Bretton Woods Agreement in 1971 when the Gold Standard went away.

The most important single factor impacting on the value of the US Dollar is monetary policy, which is shaped by the Federal Reserve (Fed). The Fed has two mandates: to achieve price stability (control inflation) and foster full employment. Its primary tool to achieve these two goals is by adjusting interest rates. When prices are rising too quickly and inflation is above the Fed’s 2% target, the Fed will raise rates, which helps the USD value. When inflation falls below 2% or the Unemployment Rate is too high, the Fed may lower interest rates, which weighs on the Greenback.

In extreme situations, the Federal Reserve can also print more Dollars and enact quantitative easing (QE). QE is the process by which the Fed substantially increases the flow of credit in a stuck financial system. It is a non-standard policy measure used when credit has dried up because banks will not lend to each other (out of the fear of counterparty default). It is a last resort when simply lowering interest rates is unlikely to achieve the necessary result. It was the Fed’s weapon of choice to combat the credit crunch that occurred during the Great Financial Crisis in 2008. It involves the Fed printing more Dollars and using them to buy US government bonds predominantly from financial institutions. QE usually leads to a weaker US Dollar.

Quantitative tightening (QT) is the reverse process whereby the Federal Reserve stops buying bonds from financial institutions and does not reinvest the principal from the bonds it holds maturing in new purchases. It is usually positive for the US Dollar.
