New Zealand Dollar poises for gains amid RBNZ rate hike odds

Fonte Fxstreet
  • Traders expect a third consecutive RBNZ rate increase to 3.0% as inflation risks persist.
  • The USD weakens amid high market expectations of a Fed rate pause in October.
  • Traders await key US PCE inflation and preliminary Q3 GDP releases for directional cues.

NZD/USD moves little after posting modest gains in the previous trading day, hovering around 0.5700 during Asian hour on Monday. The pair may regain its ground as the New Zealand Dollar (NZD) could receive support from expectations that the Reserve Bank of New Zealand (RBNZ) will deliver a rate hike later this week.

RBNZ seen resuming tightening with October hike to 3%

According to TD Securities, expectations for the Reserve Bank of New Zealand’s October policy decision have shifted. The bank notes that “we had forecast the RBNZ to pause at its October meeting,” but now anticipates that “the Bank [will] hike the Official Cash Rate 25bps at this week's meeting to 3%.”

Although data from last week showed inflation eased slightly more than forecast in the third quarter, analysts expect price pressures to intensify again in the fourth quarter. This potential resurgence could push inflation above 4% and keep it above the RBNZ’s 1–3% target range for longer than previously projected.

Additionally, the NZD/USD pair may gain ground as the US Dollar (USD) faces downward pressure driven by market expectations surrounding the Federal Reserve’s policy path. Financial markets anticipate that the Fed will hold interest rates steady in October before potentially pursuing another rate hike in December. According to the CME FedWatch Tool, market pricing reflects a 90.6% probability of a rate pause at the October 27–28 policy meeting, alongside a 79.7% chance of a rate increase in December.

Looking ahead, traders will likely monitor key US economic releases scheduled for this week to gauge future rate moves. Particular attention will be given to the Personal Consumption Expenditures (PCE) inflation data and preliminary third-quarter GDP figures.

Fed focus shifts to Warsh’s balancing act on inflation and growth

Economists at Deutsche Bank highlight that with a rate hold widely expected, market attention is set to pivot toward the communication angle. They argue that “the interest will therefore be in Chair Warsh’s press conference and how the Fed balances still-elevated inflation and solid growth against the recent tightening in financial conditions,” underscoring that the policy message may matter as much as the decision itself for US Dollar and US Treasury positioning.

New Zealand Dollar FAQs

The New Zealand Dollar (NZD), also known as the Kiwi, is a well-known traded currency among investors. Its value is broadly determined by the health of the New Zealand economy and the country’s central bank policy. Still, there are some unique particularities that also can make NZD move. The performance of the Chinese economy tends to move the Kiwi because China is New Zealand’s biggest trading partner. Bad news for the Chinese economy likely means less New Zealand exports to the country, hitting the economy and thus its currency. Another factor moving NZD is dairy prices as the dairy industry is New Zealand’s main export. High dairy prices boost export income, contributing positively to the economy and thus to the NZD.

The Reserve Bank of New Zealand (RBNZ) aims to achieve and maintain an inflation rate between 1% and 3% over the medium term, with a focus to keep it near the 2% mid-point. To this end, the bank sets an appropriate level of interest rates. When inflation is too high, the RBNZ will increase interest rates to cool the economy, but the move will also make bond yields higher, increasing investors’ appeal to invest in the country and thus boosting NZD. On the contrary, lower interest rates tend to weaken NZD. The so-called rate differential, or how rates in New Zealand are or are expected to be compared to the ones set by the US Federal Reserve, can also play a key role in moving the NZD/USD pair.

Macroeconomic data releases in New Zealand are key to assess the state of the economy and can impact the New Zealand Dollar’s (NZD) valuation. A strong economy, based on high economic growth, low unemployment and high confidence is good for NZD. High economic growth attracts foreign investment and may encourage the Reserve Bank of New Zealand to increase interest rates, if this economic strength comes together with elevated inflation. Conversely, if economic data is weak, NZD is likely to depreciate.

The New Zealand Dollar (NZD) tends to strengthen during risk-on periods, or when investors perceive that broader market risks are low and are optimistic about growth. This tends to lead to a more favorable outlook for commodities and so-called ‘commodity currencies’ such as the Kiwi. Conversely, NZD tends to weaken at times of market turbulence or economic uncertainty as investors tend to sell higher-risk assets and flee to the more-stable safe havens.
