Swiss Franc strengthens as US Dollar slips on dovish Fed signals

  • USD/CHF depreciates as US Dollar pulls back after New York Fed President John Williams signals no rate hikes for 2027.
  • Markets await crucial September CPI reports to gauge upcoming Federal Reserve policy moves.
  • CHF receives support as Swiss 10-year government bond yield rebounds to near 0.56%.

USD/CHF extends its losses for the second consecutive day, trading around 0.8320 during Asian hours on Wednesday. The currency pair depreciated as the US Dollar (USD) lost ground following dovish remarks from New York Federal Reserve President John Williams.

Speaking on Tuesday, Williams noted that while he maintains his view that one more rate hike may be appropriate this year, he does not foresee additional rate increases in 2027. In response, the CME FedWatch Tool suggests markets are currently pricing in roughly a 77% probability that the Fed will leave interest rates unchanged this month, alongside an 88% chance of a rate hike in December.

Market focus now shifts to the US September CPI inflation data scheduled for release later in the North American session, which could offer clearer direction on the Federal Reserve’s monetary policy path. Headline U.S. CPI is expected to show a year-over-year rise of 3.6% in September, up from 3.4% in August. Meanwhile, Core CPI—which excludes volatile items—is projected to tick up to 2.5% year-over-year from 2.4% in the previous month.

Yield on the Swiss 10-year government bond rose to near 0.56%, tracking a broader decline in global bond yields and falling oil prices. This drop in oil came after Russia agreed to release diesel supplies onto global markets, easing concerns over fuel shortages and reducing the immediate need for fiscal household support. Higher bond yields could provide support for the Swiss Franc (CHF).

Meanwhile, Swiss inflation rose to a two-year high of 1% in September, driven mainly by elevated energy prices amid the prolonged Middle East conflict, though it remained well within the Swiss National Bank’s 0–2% target range. The Swiss National Bank (SNB) kept its policy rate at 0% in September, with Vice Chairman Martin noting that no rate adjustment is currently needed due to low and stable inflation and limited spillover risks, adding that the Swiss economy was working "very well." While most economists expect the policy rate to remain unchanged through 2027, markets continue to price in a rate hike by year-end and roughly three hikes by the end of 2027.

USD/CHF seen consolidating as UOB tightens near-term range

Strategists at UOB Group note that their early-October call for USD/CHF to have “likely entered a range-trading phase between 0.8245 and 0.8365” remains broadly intact, even after the Dollar “rose to a high of 0.8350” yesterday. They point to “a tentative buildup in upward momentum,” but stress that it is “insufficient to indicate a sustained rise.” As a result, UOB continues to look for range-bound price action, but now “expect a narrower range of 0.8295/0.8365” over the coming 1–3 weeks. The bank adds that, looking ahead, “should USD close above 0.8365, it would increase the risk of a break above 0.8385.”

Swiss Franc FAQs

The Swiss Franc (CHF) is Switzerland’s official currency. It is among the top ten most traded currencies globally, reaching volumes that well exceed the size of the Swiss economy. Its value is determined by the broad market sentiment, the country’s economic health or action taken by the Swiss National Bank (SNB), among other factors. Between 2011 and 2015, the Swiss Franc was pegged to the Euro (EUR). The peg was abruptly removed, resulting in a more than 20% increase in the Franc’s value, causing a turmoil in markets. Even though the peg isn’t in force anymore, CHF fortunes tend to be highly correlated with the Euro ones due to the high dependency of the Swiss economy on the neighboring Eurozone.

The Swiss Franc (CHF) is considered a safe-haven asset, or a currency that investors tend to buy in times of market stress. This is due to the perceived status of Switzerland in the world: a stable economy, a strong export sector, big central bank reserves or a longstanding political stance towards neutrality in global conflicts make the country’s currency a good choice for investors fleeing from risks. Turbulent times are likely to strengthen CHF value against other currencies that are seen as more risky to invest in.

The Swiss National Bank (SNB) meets four times a year – once every quarter, less than other major central banks – to decide on monetary policy. The bank aims for an annual inflation rate of less than 2%. When inflation is above target or forecasted to be above target in the foreseeable future, the bank will attempt to tame price growth by raising its policy rate. Higher interest rates are generally positive for the Swiss Franc (CHF) as they lead to higher yields, making the country a more attractive place for investors. On the contrary, lower interest rates tend to weaken CHF.

Macroeconomic data releases in Switzerland are key to assessing the state of the economy and can impact the Swiss Franc’s (CHF) valuation. The Swiss economy is broadly stable, but any sudden change in economic growth, inflation, current account or the central bank’s currency reserves have the potential to trigger moves in CHF. Generally, high economic growth, low unemployment and high confidence are good for CHF. Conversely, if economic data points to weakening momentum, CHF is likely to depreciate.

As a small and open economy, Switzerland is heavily dependent on the health of the neighboring Eurozone economies. The broader European Union is Switzerland’s main economic partner and a key political ally, so macroeconomic and monetary policy stability in the Eurozone is essential for Switzerland and, thus, for the Swiss Franc (CHF). With such dependency, some models suggest that the correlation between the fortunes of the Euro (EUR) and the CHF is more than 90%, or close to perfect.
