Age 65 is often a pivot point for retirement planning because it's when Medicare eligibility begins. However, for current near-retirees, it's not the finish line for Social Security. The average benefit for people who are 65 is $1,607.27 per month, according to December 2025 data from the Social Security Administration (SSA), the most recent figures available. This number is lower than the $2,088.79 overall average for all retired workers reported by the SSA as of September 2026.

While you're eligible for health coverage at 65, your full retirement age (FRA) is 67 if you were born in 1960 or later. Claiming Social Security at 65 results in a permanent 13.33% reduction in your monthly benefit.

What 65-year-olds collect

The average benefit varies by gender, with men receiving $1,772.00 vs. women $1,457.40, a gap of about $314.60 per month. This difference generally reflects historical earnings gaps and variations in work history. For most retirees, these monthly payments serve as a foundation for their retirement income but are rarely enough to cover all expenses.

The dollar amounts in this table reflect SSA data as of December 2025. These figures provide a baseline for what people who are currently 65 receive, rather than a projection for those who claim at 65 in the future. Your personal benefit depends entirely on your own earnings history and when you choose to file.

Why age 65 is an early claim

If your full retirement age is 67, claiming at 65 is technically an early filing. The SSA bases your benefit on an average of your wages across your 35 highest-earning years, which are adjusted for inflation and run through the primary insurance amount (PIA) formula. Filing two years before your FRA prevents you from reaching that full baseline amount.

A 3.6% cost-of-living adjustment (COLA) will take effect in 2027. That adjustment will add about $58 a month on top of the overall age-65 average listed above. These adjustments are designed to help benefits keep pace with inflation, though they often lag behind the actual rising costs seniors face.

Social Security was designed to replace only 40% of pre-retirement income, a share that's well short of what most retirees need to cover their living costs. This makes it a supplemental source of income rather than a full replacement for a salary. Most retirees must bridge the gap with savings or other income sources.

Balancing your Medicare enrollment at 65 with a Social Security strategy helps ensure you don't lock in a lower monthly check than your long-term budget requires.

Should you claim Social Security at 65?

Claiming Social Security at 65 could make sense if you have a short life expectancy, you lack personal savings or a job to help you cover your living costs until your FRA, or if you just don't want to wait any longer for your benefits to begin.

But it's worth thinking through all your options before deciding which claiming age is right for you. Every month you delay increases your checks slightly until you qualify for your largest checks at age 70. Waiting until then could lead to a much larger lifetime benefit if you live into your mid-80s or beyond.

If you do decide to wait until you qualify for larger checks, keep in mind you'll have to pay for your Medicare Part B premiums out of your own pocket for the time being. Once you apply for Social Security, the government will start taking these premiums out of your benefits, so you don't have to pay a separate bill.
