On its third-quarter 2026 earnings call, held on Oct. 27, 2026, Smithfield (NASDAQ:SFD) reported an adjusted operating profit of $145 million, down from $310 million a year earlier as hog oversupply crushed upstream margins. High feed and transport costs hurt live animal production, but packaged meats generated stable cash flow and expanded margins. Three things management said stand out.

1. Outsourcing Hog Production Reduces Capital Exposure and Volatility

Smithfield signed a supply agreement to cut its internal hog production -- its upstream live-animal farming operations -- by 900,000 head per year. Shifting live-animal production to external partners reduces capital intensity while preserving processing volume.

Third, while our upstream segments remain challenged, we entered into a new long-term supply agreement with an existing joint venture partner, which will reduce the number of hogs that we produce internally by roughly 900,000 per year.
-- Shane Smith, President and Chief Executive Officer

2. Packaged Meats Gains Market Share Across Core Product Lines

The consumer products division -- which transforms fresh pork into bacon, sausage, and lunch meat -- expanded operating margin by 80 basis points to 11.6%. Smithfield outperformed rivals by taking volume share in its five largest retail categories.

In Q3, we are the only manufacturer in our competitive set to grow our volume almost 1% in our key categories, and we grew our volume share by over 40 basis points, which was more than any other manufacturer.
-- Steve France, President of Packaged Meats

3. Acquiring Nathan's Famous Secures High-Margin Brand Ownership

Smithfield finalized its acquisition of Nathan's Famous, ending a licensing agreement that was set to expire in 2032. Owning the brand outright eliminates license royalty fees and opens up direct sales in food service channels.

I would just add that closing the Nathan's deal, it really secures our long-term rights to that brand. The license would have expired in 2032, and it really bolsters our packaged meats portfolio.
-- Mark Hall, Chief Financial Officer

Looking Ahead

Pork commodity oversupply continues to depress processing spreads, but steady consumer demand for packaged meats gives Smithfield cash flow to fund long-term growth. Management is watching export volume recovery and pricing discipline across retail channels.

Packaged meats remains resilient. In our upstream segments, we are focused on reducing market risk by lowering the number of hogs internally produced and by optimizing our fresh pork operations.
-- Shane Smith, President and Chief Executive Officer

With net debt at 0.5 times adjusted earnings, the balance sheet provides flexibility to maintain dividend payments through cyclical downturns.

Beyond the near term, our confidence in Smithfield's long-term value creation model is unchanged. The strength of our balance sheet, liquidity, and cash generation allows us to continue investing in our strategy, reinforce the business, and return capital to shareholders.
-- Shane Smith, President and Chief Executive Officer
