On its fiscal fourth-quarter 2026 earnings call, held on Oct. 27, 2026, Simply Good Foods (NASDAQ:SMPL) outlined plans to reset its operating model and reinvest in brand growth. The nutritional snack maker is sacrificing short-term profitability to restore brand equity and gross margin, which measures profit remaining after direct production costs. Three key takeaways from management explain how this turnaround strategy will unfold.

1. Double-Digit Price Hikes Aim to Restore Gross Margin to 40%

To combat margin compression, management is implementing price increases in the high-single-digit range across most of its product lines. This pricing shift accepts near-term volume pressure to restore long-term profitability and fund reinvestment in marketing.

That said, the pricing action is expected to materially improve the economics of the business, moving gross margins closer to our historic level of 40% and providing the financial firepower to reinvest in our brands.

2. Marketing Overhaul Redirects Capital Toward High-Return Brand Building

A comprehensive study revealed that recent marketing investments underperformed industry standards due to weak creative messaging and inefficient ad spending. Management is shifting resources away from point-of-purchase digital ads and toward broader streaming and influencer campaigns to rebuild household penetration, which measures the percentage of households that buy a brand.

Our recently completed marketing mix analysis confirmed that our past 18-month brand building investments generated returns well below industry benchmarks and our own expectations. That reinforced the need for meaningful change.
-- Joe Scalzo, President and Chief Executive Officer

3. Brand Portfolios Pivot to Core Products and GLP-1 Weight Maintenance

After struggling with unprofitable line extensions, the company is trimming noncore items to focus on core protein bars and ready-to-drink shakes. For its Atkins brand, management is targeting an estimated 23 million former users of GLP-1 anti-obesity medications who need nutritional support to maintain weight loss.

Research estimates that approximately 23 million U.S. adults are lapsed users or are cycling on and off treatment. With decades of experience helping consumers manage their weight through nutrition, we believe Atkins is well positioned to serve this Group.

Looking Ahead

Sales headwinds remain heavily front-loaded in the first quarter of fiscal 2027, but cost savings and pricing leverage set up a second-half acceleration.

As we think about the cadence of fiscal 2027, we expect to see stronger top-line performance in the second half of the year than the first half.
-- Chris Bealer, Chief Financial Officer

Long-term growth relies on structural cost discipline and brand recruitment rather than near-term earnings maximization.

Our objective for FY 2027 is straightforward: restore the economics of the business, rebuild consumer connections with our brands, improve brand fundamentals while exiting FY 2027 with better momentum, stronger profitability, and a healthier foundation for long-term growth.
-- Joe Scalzo, President and Chief Executive Officer
