Stock Market Today, Nov. 2: CoreWeave Slides on Debt Concerns After CrowdStrike Partnership Expands

Source The Motley Fool

CoreWeave (NASDAQ:CRWV), a specialized cloud computing provider for generative AI workloads, closed at $50.15, down 8.60%. Premarket partnership news with CrowdStrike faded as leverage concerns weighed on the market, and investors are watching Nov. 10 earnings.

Trading volume reached 47.1M shares, coming in nearly 21% above its three-month average of 38.9M shares. CoreWeave IPO'd in 2025 and has grown 25% since going public.

How the markets moved today

The S&P 500 (SNPINDEX: ^GSPC) dropped 0.50% to 7,542, and the Nasdaq Composite (NASDAQINDEX: ^IXIC) fell 1.07% to 25,164. Among peers in AI cloud infrastructure and specialized data center services, Oracle closed at $119.10, down 8.85%, and Nebius Group closed at $141.39, down 8.27%, underscoring weakness across chip-adjacent infrastructure names.

What this means for investors

The latest price action in CoreWeave shows continued shareholder discomfort with the cloud stock's reliance on debt.

Although the expanded partnership with CrowdStrike is objectively good news for the company, the excitement over that deal was short-lived as the stock's downtrend continued.

Customer interest is not the issue. Demand for neocloud infrastructure is insatiable, as CoreWeave's backlog totaled $104 billion, not including Q3 customer commitments.

Still, that demand does the company little good if its ability to finance infrastructure builds remains in question. Considering that industry insiders like Elon Musk think many neoclouds will fail, CoreWeave is likely to remain under the gun for the foreseeable future.

In fairness, CoreWeave is not the only neocloud stock struggling, as both Nebius and Oracle also plunged. However, Oracle still has other legacy businesses, and Nebius is a profitable company with a debt level that's a fraction of CoreWeave's approximate $35 billion in obligations.

The real test for CoreWeave stock may come when it announces its earnings for the third quarter of 2026 on Nov. 10. Factors such as growth, capital expenditures, and debt levels will be where investors will probably focus.

If CoreWeave can continue building infrastructure, address its backlog, and service its debt, it may eventually win back investors' confidence. Nonetheless, any interruptions to this growth could be costly for CoreWeave, making investing in the stock a risky proposition at this time.
