On its third-quarter 2026 earnings call, held on Oct. 27, 2026, Travelzoo (NASDAQ:TZOO) announced that it's accelerating its transition to a paid membership model to drive recurring subscription revenue. This strategic pivot creates short-term accounting drags because member acquisition costs are expensed immediately while subscription fees are recognized over 12 months.

Over time, building a recurring fee base stabilizes cash flows and reduces reliance on ad revenue. Three things management said on the call stand out.

1. Paid Membership Expansion Trades Near-Term Earnings for Recurring Cash

Travelzoo is shifting away from legacy ad-supported models to paid club memberships. Accounting rules force marketing costs to be expensed immediately, while subscription revenue is recognized over 12 months, creating near-term earnings drag.

The reported quarterly loss came from higher investment in growing the number of club members. Our objective is to increase recurring membership fees revenue.
-- Jeff Hoffman, Financial Controller, North America

2. Exclusive Travel Deals Drive Subscriber Retention and Acquisition Growth

Member retention depends heavily on proprietary travel packages that consumers can't find on standard booking engines. These exclusive offerings keep annual cancellation rates low while allowing marketing spend to scale efficiently across advertising channels.

What we are hearing from the club members is what is mostly driving their retention and renewal are the great offers, the exclusive offers that we provide them... that is really what is most important to our members.
-- Holger Bartel, Global Chief Executive Officer

3. Proprietary Inventory Shields Business Model From AI Search Automation

Automated search tools and artificial intelligence agents threaten to disintermediate traditional online travel agencies (OTAs). Travelzoo avoids this threat because automated web scrapers can't access deals locked behind its paid subscription wall.

Most of what you find with travel agents, OTAs -- it is the same everywhere. We have stressed many times, offers from Travelzoo are exclusive. You cannot find them anywhere else. So when some people say, Travelzoo is not needed anymore, I can just use AI to find deals. No, you cannot. Because we are creating and negotiating offers that you do not find anywhere else.
-- Holger Bartel, Global Chief Executive Officer

Looking Ahead

Paid club memberships are expanding rapidly, shifting the top line toward predictable subscription income.

We are working to grow the number of paying club members and accelerate revenue growth by converting legacy members and adding new club members.
-- Holger Bartel, Global Chief Executive Officer

An affluent member base provides insulation against economic downturns, while direct supplier relationships preserve deal exclusivity. Management is watching acquisition costs and legacy conversion velocity to ensure durable long-term margin expansion.

Travelzoo members are affluent, active, and open to new experiences. We inspire travel enthusiasts to travel to places they never imagined they could.
-- Holger Bartel, Global Chief Executive Officer
