On its third-quarter 2026 earnings call, held on Oct. 27, 2026, JetBlue (NASDAQ:JBLU) reported expanding operating margins despite persistent jet fuel cost pressures. For long-term investors, the airline's ability to drive unit revenue growth while executing its multiyear strategic transformation program, JetForward, outlines a path toward financial recovery. Three key takeaways from management's comments stand out.

1. Target Set for 2027 Operating Profitability and 2028 Free Cash Flow

Management is prioritizing sustained operating profitability in 2027 through disciplined operational execution and targeted cost efficiency savings. Achieving positive free cash flow, which is cash generated after capital expenditures, and at least $1 in earnings per share (EPS), a key measure of profitability, remains the core financial goal for 2028.

Importantly, we are already expanding margins year over year, despite elevated fuel prices. We remain focused on operating profitability in 2027 and we see multiple paths to at least $1 in earnings per share and positive free cash flow in 2028.
-- Joanna L. Geraghty, Chief Executive Officer

2. Premium BlueFirst Rollout Designed to Boost Unit Revenue

The airline is introducing BlueFirst, its new domestic first-class seating product, across targeted high-demand routes to capture premium leisure travellers. Management expects this premium initiative to drive improvement in revenue per available seat mile (RASM), a key airline unit revenue metric, as rollout matures.

At runway, we expect BlueFirst to deliver nearly five points of RASM improvement with its revenue and margin contributions building through 2028 and beyond.
-- Joanna L. Geraghty, Chief Executive Officer

3. Unencumbered Assets Provide Balance Sheet Flexibility

JetBlue holds approximately $7 billion in total unencumbered assets, which are unpledged assets available for debt financing, including $2.8 billion in aircraft and engines. This substantial liquidity cushion provides financial flexibility as the business works through elevated fuel costs and executes its strategic initiatives.

Together with our existing liquidity, our financing options give us confidence that we have the flexibility and runway to navigate a prolonged period of higher fuel prices while continuing to support our operations and advance JetForward.
-- Ursula L. Hurley, Chief Financial Officer

Looking Ahead

Unit revenues are accelerating into the fourth quarter, supported by steady customer demand and pricing discipline.

Revenue materially exceeded our initial expectations and strengthened as the quarter progressed, with momentum continuing into the fourth quarter.
-- Joanna L. Geraghty, Chief Executive Officer

Network expansion in Fort Lauderdale, customer loyalty initiatives, and non-ticket travel offerings reinforce JetBlue's market position. Management is focusing on capacity management and cost control to bridge the business toward sustained profitability.

We expect positive free cash flow in 2028 and believe we have the liquidity and unencumbered asset base needed to get us there. We will remain focused on disciplined execution and capital management to drive sustainable earnings growth and create long term value for our shareholders.
-- Ursula L. Hurley, Chief Financial Officer
