British Pound: Upside extension capped by 1.3280 against US Dollar – UOB

Source Fxstreet

United Overseas Bank’s (UOB) Quek Ser Leang and Lee Sue Ann report that GBP/USD has bounced firmly to 1.3255, invalidating their prior downside-bias call. Short-term momentum allows for further gains, but they doubt a clean break of major resistance at 1.3280 without stronger upside signals. Over the coming weeks, they expect Pound-Dollar to stay range-bound between 1.3170 and 1.3280, with another resistance level at 1.3310 if the upper band is breached.

Pound holds firm within defined range

"24-HOUR VIEW: While we indicated yesterday that GBP “could trade with a downside bias,” we held the view that “any decline is likely part of a lower range of 1.3190/1.3235.” Our view was incorrect, and we also underestimated the volatility as GBP rose sharply from 1.3205 to 1.3259. GBP closed on a firm note at 1.3255 (+0.34%). The advance has scope to extend, but with no significant increase in upward momentum, GBP may not break the major resistance at 1.3280. To sustain the momentum, GBP must hold above 1.3230, with minor support at 1.3245."

"1-3 WEEKS VIEW: On Monday (12 Oct, spot at 1.3235), we highlighted that GBP “is expected to trade in a range between 1.3170 and 1.3280.” Although short-term upward momentum has improved somewhat, we will continue to hold the same view for now. Looking ahead, should GBP break above 1.3280, it would likely encounter another firm resistance at 1.3310."
