Only 1,055 of China's 221,900 new AI dramas on Douyin passed 100 million views

Chinese studios uploaded 221,900 new AI-generated dramas and comic dramas to Douyin, the short-video app owned by ByteDance, in the first half of 2026.

A half-year industry report puts the hit rate at 0.48%, with only 1,055 of these breaking through 100 million views.

Just 2,886 titles cleared a 50 million-view break-even line

The report sets break-even at about 50 million views, and 2,886 shows got there. The 2,886 account for about 1.3% of the slate, counting only Douyin, although many shows are also streamed on other platforms.

New releases sank month over month from March but total viewing continued to rise to 515.7 billion plays over six months. Audiences are concentrating on a diminishing number of hits.

The same report says that China’s AI drama market will be 40 billion yuan in 2026.

ByteDance launched Seedance 2.0 on its Jimeng platform in February, Cryptopolitan said, and in April rolled it out to business customers in over 100 nations, except the US, where it was withheld after legal action from Hollywood studios over copied likenesses and protected material.

In late April, the National Film Administration granted a cinema license to Bona Film Group’s “Sanxingdui: Future Memories.”

The 90-minute sci-fi feature, made with Jimeng tools, passed censorship as an animated film because there is no AI category.

In early 2026, a one-minute AI short drama cost 5,000 yuan. By mid-year, it cost a few hundred yuan.

Beijing, Shanghai and Shenzhen bid for studios with cash and compute

Shanghai’s May package offers AI micro-drama producers computing power and cloud AI models, along with help with overseas sales.

Beijing has a 260 million yuan fund for audiovisual technology, and its Huairou film zone furnishes AI drama producers with vouchers to offset computing fees.

Shenzhen provides technical support and discounted rent, and AI filmmakers report getting calls from city and industrial park officials across the country offering to relocate them.

In August, iQIYI CEO Gong Yu said the streamer is “all-in” on AI, and it’s paying subsidies to some creators whose AI content runs on the service.

The glut has prompted complaints. The fight is fiercest over likeness, with actors protesting AI movies that use their faces and voice actors worried about losing work.

Viewers also say AI shows pinch characters and dance clips of other creators without credit.

Beijing requires content produced by AI to be labeled, but who owns copyright is yet to be settled.

Some viewers saw the August box-office run of “Niu Lai,” a crudely animated film made the old-fashioned way, as a vote against AI content.
