Third-quarter sales grew 19% year over year to $5.1 billion.
Enterprise optical sales quadrupled to a $6 billion run rate.
Customer deposits provided $639 million in net cash over nine months.
On its third-quarter 2026 earnings call, held on Oct. 27, 2026, Corning (NYSE:GLW) announced that it exceeded quarterly financial targets while accelerating its multiyear growth framework driven by artificial intelligence demand. For long-term shareholders, expansion in optical networking and customer-funded manufacturing capacity provide operating leverage and cash flow visibility. The company's structure for customer agreements reduces capital risk while supporting capacity additions. Three things management said stand out.
Demand for generative artificial intelligence has expanded networking requirements across computing clusters. Optical Communications, the company's fiber and network equipment segment, quadrupled its enterprise sales run rate (an annualized measure of revenue) by supplying optical components to cloud data centers.
At the launch of SpringBoard, our enterprise sales run rate was $1.4 billion. Since that time, we have quadrupled enterprise sales to a $6 billion run rate.
-- Edward A. Schlesinger, Executive Vice President and Chief Financial Officer
Expanding fiber manufacturing platforms requires substantial capital expenditure, or money spent on physical facilities and machinery, which creates risk before sales materialize. To protect free cash flow, management collects upfront customer deposits that offset capital spending and return cash only as customers buy committed product volumes.
There is a line in our operating cash flow labeled customer deposits. For the first 9 months of the year, that amount was $639 million.
-- Edward A. Schlesinger, Executive Vice President and Chief Financial Officer
Current server networks connect graphics processing unit chips using copper cables in a layout called scale-out architecture. As server cluster density increases, management expects networks to shift toward optical scale-up architecture (where fiber connects individual chips directly), which increases fiber requirements tenfold per chip.
What we said in the May IR event was we expected optical scale-up to begin to accelerate in 2028. We continue to believe that strongly.
-- Wendell Weeks, Chairman, Chief Executive Officer and President
Revenue momentum is accelerating across data center connectivity and domestic solar manufacturing, giving management clear visibility into multiyear expansion goals. Long-standing manufacturing platforms and co-innovation agreements with major technology buyers provide structural advantages as manufacturing expands. Management is watching display glass pricing discipline and operational productivity in solar manufacturing platforms.
We expect to double our sales from 20 billion to $40 billion by the end of 2030, to grow EPS much faster than sales and to improve our financial profile even further.
-- Edward A. Schlesinger, Executive Vice President and Chief Financial Officer
Customer partnerships built on shared risk and technical collaboration position the business to capture long-term networking demand.
When we get this right, our customers become enduring partners. Giving us the opportunity to solve their challenges and help create their own extraordinary products that delight their customers in turn.
-- Wendell Weeks, Chairman, Chief Executive Officer and President
