On its third quarter 2026 earnings call, held on Oct. 30, 2026, Medallion Financial (NASDAQ:MFIN) announced third-quarter results driven by expansion in consumer lending. Management is trading higher net interest margin (the difference between interest earned on loans and interest paid on deposits) for lower credit risk. That creates a safer balance sheet and positions the business for durable compounding over the long run. Three things management said stand out.

1. Medallion Financial Accepts NIM Compression for Safer Home Improvement Credits

Management is intentionally growing its home improvement lending segment faster than its recreational loan segment to target higher-credit borrowers. That strategic pivot reduces net interest margin (the spread between loan yields and borrowing costs) but protects portfolio quality over the economic cycle.

Also, as a reminder, by growing our home improvement book faster than our rec book, NIM compression will be a side effect. This is a trade we would take as the credit profile is stronger for home improvement and the opportunity in that market is larger.
-- Andrew Murstein, President and Chief Executive Officer

2. Diversified Deposits Lower the Company's High Funding Costs

Medallion Financial relies heavily on brokered deposits (certificates of deposit acquired through third-party brokers) to fund consumer loans with predictable maturities. By expanding into non-brokered time deposits and high-yield savings accounts, the company is working to reduce funding costs while preserving solid asset-liability matching.

However, we also grew our high-yield savings balances from $2.5 million in Q2 2026 to $101 million as of September 30. When we have these opportunities to diversify our deposits and reduce our cost of funds, we will take them.
-- Andrew Murstein, President and Chief Executive Officer

3. Board Authorizes New Buyback Plan With Shares Below Tangible Book Value

Over the past six months, the company raised $130 million in debt and preferred stock to maintain capital flexibility. And because shares trade below tangible book value (net worth excluding goodwill and intangible assets), management launched a fresh share repurchase program.

To that end, on October 27, our Board of Directors approved a new $40 million stock repurchase plan with no expiration date. We look at this as a reload and gives us the ability to buy our stock back since we believe it is undervalued.
-- Andrew Murstein, President and Chief Executive Officer

Looking Ahead

Asset expansion is accelerating toward a target of $5 billion over the next few years. Marketing efforts and new partnership programs are supporting market share gains, while disciplined loan pricing protects credit quality. And to preserve net interest income, management is raising loan rates across the board.

As I mentioned on our first quarter call, our goal is to grow from $3 billion to $5 billion in assets over the next few years. We feel we have the business, the team and the market positioning to achieve this goal.
-- Andrew Murstein, President and Chief Executive Officer

On the capital allocation side, the focus remains on consumer loan growth, dividend increases, and stock repurchases. Retiring $15 million in debt at a discount further bolsters balance sheet strength.

We remain pleased with our business momentum and are confident that we have the business, the team and the market positioning to maintain our strong volumes, which will result in long-term shareholder value.
-- Andrew Murstein, President and Chief Executive Officer
