Fall is a much-anticipated time of year for many people. But if you're on Medicare, it's important to participate in a major event happening now through Dec. 7 -- Medicare open enrollment.

During annual open enrollment, Medicare participants can make changes to their coverage. That could mean moving from one Medicare Advantage plan to another or switching Part D drug plans. And if any of these signs apply to you, it may be time to dump your current drug plan and sign up for new Part D coverage.

1. Your plan's premiums are rising

Part D plan costs aren't uniform. Unlike Medicare Part B, which has a standard monthly premium that applies to most enrollees, the amount you have to pay for Part D hinges on the plan you choose.

If your plan's premiums are increasing in 2027, it's a sign that you should at least look at different options for the new year. Premiums aren't the only cost associated with Part D drug plans. In fact, it's important to not get too hung up on premium costs and focus on total costs instead. But if you know your plan is getting more expensive off the bat, why not look around and see what else is out there?

2. Your prescription costs have gone up

Medicare Part D plans use formularies that group medications into various tiers. And the higher the tier, the higher the copay typically is.

If you have medications being bumped to a higher tier for 2027, you could end up spending much more on them. In that situation, it pays to see if there's a Part D plan that lets you fill your prescriptions for less.

3. Your plan's pharmacy network is changing

It's important to make sure your medications are affordable under your Part D plan. But it's also crucial to make sure you can fill your prescriptions easily.

If your plan's pharmacy network is changing and you'll no longer have access to convenient options, it pays to see if there's another Part D plan for you. You don't want to run into a situation where you're not on top of your medications because the distance to the closest approved pharmacy is too great.

Your medications probably eat up a good chunk of your retirement budget, so it's important to take steps to make them as affordable as possible. Switching to a new Medicare Part D plan could result in lower premiums, cheaper copays, and better pharmacy access. So it's worth looking around between now and Dec. 7 to see if there's a better plan than the one you currently have.
