Investors choosing between Airbnb (NASDAQ:ABNB) and DoorDash (NASDAQ:DASH) must weigh global travel dominance against the rapid expansion of local delivery services as both companies mature into profitable enterprises.

Airbnb connects travelers with unique stays and experiences worldwide, while DoorDash facilitates the delivery of food, groceries, and retail goods. Although they operate in different industries, both rely on massive network effects and are prominent names among consumer discretionary stocks today.

The case for Airbnb

Airbnb operates a global marketplace for stays and travel experiences, serving hosts and guests in more than 220 countries and regions. The company generates a significant portion of its business from outside the United States, with approximately 61% of revenue coming from international listings in its latest annual report. Its strategy focuses on expanding the number of high-quality hosts and improving the user experience for travelers, often competing with established travel sites such as Booking Holdings and Expedia Group.

On a trailing-12-month (TTM) basis through Q2 2026, revenue reached $13.1 billion, representing a year-over-year growth rate of approximately 13%. The company reported net income of nearly $2.7 billion for the period, resulting in a net margin of roughly 20%. This high level of profitability demonstrates the company's ability to generate significant earnings from its travel marketplace operations even as it continues to invest in new international markets.

As of its June 2026 balance sheet, the debt-to-equity ratio was roughly 0.3x, meaning it holds $0.30 in total debt for every dollar of shareholder equity. The current ratio is approximately 1.4x, indicating the company has $1.40 in short-term assets for every $1 of liabilities due within one year.

Trailing free cash flow was nearly $4.9 billion. However, you should note that stock-based compensation accounted for roughly 34.3% of operating cash flow, inflating reported cash generation because it is a non-cash expense.

The case for DoorDash

DoorDash provides a local commerce platform that connects merchants, consumers, and delivery workers, known as Dashers. By the end of 2025, the platform supported over 56 million monthly active users and partnered with more than 600,000 merchants. Its business strategy involves expanding beyond restaurant delivery into groceries and retail, while growing its subscription services, such as DashPass, to build customer loyalty in a competitive on-demand market.

TTM revenue reached nearly $16 billion, a sharp increase of nearly 34% from the prior year. The company achieved net income of close to $841 million during this fiscal period, reflecting a net margin of roughly 5%. While its net margin is lower than its travel-focused counterpart, the rapid revenue growth suggests the company is successfully capturing market share in the broader local delivery sector.

As of its June 2026 balance sheet, the current ratio was approximately 1.4x, indicating a healthy ability to cover short-term obligations with current assets. The debt-to-equity ratio was roughly 0.3x, showing a relatively conservative use of debt relative to equity.

TTM free cash flow for the year reached nearly $2.6 billion, but note that stock-based compensation accounted for roughly 43.2% of operating cash flow, inflating reported cash generation, as stock-based compensation is a non-cash expense added back in the cash flow statement.

Risk profile comparison

Airbnb faces significant regulatory and legal risks, including ongoing tax disputes in Italy and proposed fines in Spain that could impact its financial results. The company is also navigating the potential effects of the EU Short-Term Rental Regulation, which may change how it operates in key European cities. Furthermore, Airbnb must defend its market share against intense competition from hotel chains, search engines, and online travel agencies, including Booking Holdings.

DoorDash deals with complex labor and regulatory challenges, particularly regarding the classification of Dashers as independent contractors. Lawsuits and potential mandatory reclassifications could significantly increase its operating costs, as seen in previous settlements regarding courier pay in major cities.

Valuation comparison

Both stocks trade at the same forward price-to-earnings (P/E) ratio. Airbnb trades at a higher sales multiple, reflecting its higher margins.

Which stock would I buy in 2026?

DoorDash is growing faster than Airbnb, indicating the potential for more upside as it continues to expand its platform into new markets and add more merchants. The stock trades at a forward PEG ratio of 0.6x, compared to nearly 2.0x for Airbnb.

DoorDash looks like the more undervalued growth stock right now. The business is benefiting from product improvements, more habitual consumer shopping behavior, higher DoorDash memberships, and higher order frequency. It is basically becoming the dominant online order platform for local stores.

Analysts expect Airbnb to grow earnings at an annualized rate of 16%, but consensus has DoorDash growing earnings at 42%. This suggests DoorDash has much more room to expand margins as it scales its platform, since it is at an earlier stage of growth than Airbnb.

At the same forward P/E of 31, DoorDash offers more earnings growth for the same price and is the stock I would buy.
