As memory demand reaches new heights in 2026 thanks to artificial intelligence (AI), many investors are weighing two heavyweights in the storage space. Deciding between Micron Technology (NASDAQ:MU) and Sandisk (NASDAQ:SNDK) requires a close look at their current and future prospects.

Micron focuses on a broad range of memory solutions, including DRAM and NAND, while Sandisk specializes in flash-based storage. While they both benefit from the same high-level industry trends, their business models and customer bases create distinct investment profiles.

The case for Micron Technology

Micron produces semiconductor memory and storage products, including DRAM and NAND, for a wide array of applications. Its business is heavily concentrated in the data center market, which represents approximately 60% of its total revenue. Customer concentration like this adds a layer of risk to the business.

In its fiscal FY 2026, revenue reached approximately $133.2 billion, representing a massive 256.3% increase over the prior year. This growth was fueled by huge demand for memory chips across semiconductor stocks, specifically for high-bandwidth applications. The company reported net income of nearly $85 billion, which translates to a strong net margin of roughly 63.8% for the year.

Micron has total cash of $43.4 billion, with total debt of $5.1 billion. It's total debt-to-equity ratio is 3.7%, and its operating cash flow for the trailing 12-month period is $89.6 billion.

The case for Sandisk

Sandisk is a vertically integrated provider of flash semiconductor storage and advanced memory technology for global markets. The company serves the Datacenter, Edge, and Consumer segments. Its strategy relies on brand recognition and multi-year purchase commitments from enterprise partners to improve demand visibility.

In FY 2026, revenue reached nearly $20.2 billion, a significant 175.3% jump from the previous year. The company successfully pivoted from previous losses to report a net income of approximately $11.4 billion. This turnaround resulted in a robust net margin of roughly 56.5% as the company benefited from improved demand visibility and higher sales volumes.

Sandisk has total cash of $4.7 billion, with total debt of $201 million, resulting in a total debt-to-equity ratio of 1.2%. It's operating cash flow for the 12-month trailing period is $11.6 billion.

Risk profile comparison

Micron faces intense competition from rivals like Samsung Electronics (OTC:SSNLF) and SK Hynix (NASDAQ:SKHY). Geopolitical risks also play a major role, particularly trade restrictions and decisions by the Chinese government that prohibit certain infrastructure operators from buying its products. The company also recently resolved patent litigation with Netlist (OTC:NLST) through a settlement and licensing deal.

Sandisk is heavily dependent on its Flash Ventures partnership for its supply, which limits its ability to respond independently to market shifts. The company is also navigating complex tax liabilities following its spin-off from Western Digital (NASDAQ:WDC). Furthermore, it faces fluctuations in manufacturing costs due to high fixed-cost obligations.

Valuation comparison

Micron appears to be the more affordable option based on both revenue and future earnings estimates, though Sandisk maintains a premium valuation for its pure-play flash portfolio.

Which stock would I buy in 2026?

Memory stocks have been clear winners thanks to AI, and that trend looks set to continue for some time. Over the last 12 months alone, as of this writing, Sandisk shares have climbed 827%, while the Micron stock price has climbed 334%. That said, even with those massive stock price run-ups, broadly speaking, the global semiconductor market is still expected to grow. It is valued at $189.6 billion in 2026 and is expected to reach $447.9 billion by 2034, according to Fortune Business Insights.

Both Sandisk and Micron could continue to reward shareholders, but in the battle between the two, I would still rather own Micron. That's because while Sandisk has a narrower focus, Micron's broader focus allows it to accomplish two things: generating more revenue and having a shield against sell-offs. For fiscal 2026, Micron's $133 billion in full-year revenue was six times more than Sandisk's $20 billion. Also, if certain markets within the memory or storage space saw a pullback in demand and spending, Sandisk could be hit particularly hard with its narrow focus. In comparison, Micron could hold up better with its more extensive product lineup.

Also, while both stocks have performed well, analysts are pricing in more upside for Micron over the next year. According to CNN, of the 33 who cover Sandisk, the median one-year price target is $2,225, which would represent a potential gain of 71.2% from the stock price as of this writing. The highest target is $3,600, representing a 177% gain. In comparison, Micron has similar upside potential, with a median one-year price target of 79.2% from 56 analysts. But the highest target of $3,000 would represent a 241.3% gain. Price targets aren't guarantees to come true, but that shows Micron has an edge when developing a risk-to-reward framework.
