Stock Market Today, Oct. 7: Webull Plunges 19% on House China Security Report

Source The Motley Fool

Webull (NASDAQ:BULL), a digital retail brokerage platform, closed at $5.89, down 19.09%. A House panel report raised China-related security concerns, and investors are watching regulatory scrutiny and customer-data risks. Trading volume reached 77.2M shares, coming in about 459% above its three-month average of 13.8M shares. Webull IPO'd in 2025 and has fallen 56% since going public.

How the markets moved today

The S&P 500 (SNPINDEX:^GSPC) closed at 7,801, down 0.23%, and the Nasdaq Composite (NASDAQINDEX:^IXIC) closed at 27,539, down 0.22%. Among online brokerage and digital retail investing platform rivals, Robinhood Markets (NASDAQ:HOOD) closed at $109.51, down 2.22%, and Interactive Brokers Group (NASDAQ:IBKR) closed at $87.74, down 3.14%, as investors weighed peer-specific news and October brokerage updates.

What this means for investors

A House panel report on Webull's ties to China sent the stock down 19% amid concerns about the potential implications on BULL shares. Some of the ties that the report found included:

  • 62% of Webull's employees reside in China
  • systems and operations may be exposed to the CCP's mandatory intelligence laws
  • U.S. customer data flows could also be accessed by China
  • 90% of sales come from the U.S.

While none of this immediately changes or disrupts Webull's day-to-day operations, it opens the door to many questions and to further regulation and oversight from the U.S.

Though the company's growth has been spectacular -- sales rose by 51% in the last quarter -- I would much rather add to my Robinhood or SoFi Technologies holdings than take on extra risk as the House committee urged the Committee on Foreign Investment in the U.S. to open a review into the situation.
