Bitcoin Wins in Every Economic Scenario, Says Bitwise CIO Matt Hougan

Source Beincrypto

Bitwise CIO Matt Hougan argues Bitcoin (BTC) will thrive regardless of economic direction. His latest CIO memo lays out three possible macro scenarios, with Bitcoin benefiting in each one meaningfully.

Institutional ETF demand, sovereign adoption, and Federal Reserve uncertainty make Bitcoin a structural winner across all economic outcomes.

Why Bitcoin Wins in Every Economic Scenario

Bitwise CIO Matt Hougan argues Bitcoin wins across all possible macro outcomes thanks to scarcity, monetary responses, and structural institutional demand. His framework covers three distinct scenarios.

I’m not saying Bitcoin will go up in a straight line. In several of these worlds bitcoin has a challenging stretch before the story resolves. When the Covid panic happened in early 2020, bitcoin fell 50% in a matter of days before it rebounded and rose ~20x.”

The three macro scenarios where Bitcoin wins:

  • AI superabundance scenario: Intelligence becomes cheap and widely available, pushing global investors toward truly scarce assets like gold and Bitcoin as hedges.
  • AI market crash scenario: An event similar to the 2008 financial crisis triggers massive government bailouts, surging the money supply dramatically. BTC would rally hard in this exact environment, Hougan wrote in his weekly memo.
  • Baseline growth scenario: With 3% GDP growth and 4% interest rates, Bitcoin momentum stays self-sustaining through continued ETF buying, corporate treasury holdings, and expanding sovereign debt.

Hougan concludes that all three economic roads clearly lead to the same destination for Bitcoin holders willing to stay patient through short-term market noise.

Will Institutional Demand Keep Fueling Bitcoin Growth?

Institutional participation has become central to Hougan’s bullish BTC outlook across all macro paths going forward. US spot Bitcoin ETFs now offer traditional investors direct Bitcoin exposure without wallet management complexity.

During Q3 2026 alone, these products pulled a net $6 billion in massive inflows, according to SoSoValue data. The reversal restored positive year-to-date performance after many prior months of outflows globally.

Bitwise’s large-cap crypto index posted a stunning 46.4% gain during the third quarter. Corporate treasury strategies and potential sovereign adoption could amplify these flows significantly further over coming quarters.

Fresh inflation data complicates the Fed outlook. September CPI rose 3.7% year-on-year while core inflation gained 0.3% monthly, exceeding analyst expectations clearly.

Traders now place Fed rate hike odds for the October 28 meeting at approximately 30%, according to the CME FedWatch Tool, after the probability briefly surged above 49–51% following the hotter-than-expected September CPI report on October 14 before moderating.

Hougan’s broader thesis is that long-term adoption trends outweigh any short-term setbacks, keeping Bitcoin on a structural upward trajectory ahead.

Bitcoin's V-shaped rebound: from $80,953 back above $83,000 — spot buyers step in as the Fed softens, but ETF outflows lingerBitcoin slid to $80,953 on October 13 — then snapped back above $83,000, reclaiming the 81,847–82,305 'golden zone' on spot-led buying as Williams and Waller cooled the Fed's hawkish tone and the dollar pulled back from its 18-month high. But October ETF outflows near $386 million and a fear-and-greed reading of 56 say the repair is unfinished. Here are the levels, the transmission chain and both cases ahead of tonight's US CPI.
