ChatGPT, Claude and Grok Suffer Same-Day Outages, Raising Cloud Infrastructure Stability Concerns

Source Tradingkey

TradingKey - Multiple major US AI platforms experienced service disruptions on Thursday morning local time. According to network status monitoring website Downdetector, OpenAI, Anthropic's Claude, Elon Musk's xAI Grok, and AI coding tool Cursor all received a high volume of user outage reports.

Among them, service issues with Grok and Claude first surfaced around 9:00 a.m. Eastern Time, while reports of OpenAI disruptions spiked around 10:30 a.m. The simultaneous outages across multiple AI platforms within a short period sparked market concerns over the stability of cloud computing infrastructure.

What Problems Are ChatGPT, Claude, and Grok Facing?

OpenAI stated that it is investigating elevated error rates affecting its ChatGPT chatbot and Codex AI coding tool. Data from Downdetector showed that user reports regarding OpenAI service outages have exceeded 12,000.

Anthropic said it is investigating Claude service errors and working on a fix. Service for some models has been restored, but Opus 4.8 and Opus 5 are still experiencing disruptions. Some users saw the message: "Due to unexpected capacity constraints, Claude is unable to respond to your message. Please try again later."

Grok also experienced access issues. Its error messages included "Grok is currently experiencing issues, and we are working to restore service as soon as possible," and "This model is temporarily unavailable, please try another model." Downdetector data showed that Claude and Grok received approximately 1,200 and 1,000 problem reports, respectively.

Cursor Affected by Claude and Grok Outages

This AI service outage also affected the AI programming tool Cursor. Because Cursor relies on external large models for part of its code generation and assisted development capabilities, service disruptions to Claude and Grok also impacted its functionality.

AI models have gradually become underlying capabilities for workflows such as software development, text generation, enterprise automation, and customer service. Simultaneous outages across multiple model providers mean that the impact extends beyond a single chatbot and could ripple through to development tools and enterprise applications.

Is Azure the Potential Cause of AI Service Outages?

Currently, the underlying cause of the service outage has not been officially confirmed by the companies involved. However, a noticeable increase in Microsoft Azure outage reports during the same period has emerged as a potential factor of concern.

OpenAI, Anthropic, and xAI all rely on cloud services such as Azure for compute power support, though their infrastructure typically incorporates resources from other cloud providers as well. If Azure experiences regional or core service disruptions, it could trigger a ripple effect on AI platforms that depend on its compute, networking, or storage capabilities.

Google Gemini currently appears unaffected by this outage. Although user reports increased during the same period, Google has not confirmed a service disruption for Gemini.

Collective AI Service Outages Highlight Compute Infrastructure Risks

While outages on individual AI platforms are not uncommon, it is relatively rare for ChatGPT, Claude, and Grok to experience service disruptions during the same time frame. This incident once again highlights that as generative AI becomes deeply embedded in enterprise and developer workflows, the availability of model services and the stability of cloud computing infrastructure are becoming key variables in industry competition.

For enterprise users, multi-model access, service degradation strategies, and backup cloud resource provisioning for AI applications may become key to mitigating the risk of large-scale service disruptions.
