Ethereum Foundation’s Trillion Dollar Security Initiative rolls out ERC-7730 clear signing on Trezor

The ERC-7730 standard was made as a solution to a challenge that has been plaguing crypto transactions for a very long time, and over time its adoption as a standard has been gaining traction.

The standard allows wallets to decode smart contract transactions and show the actual action, tokens, amounts, and destination on the device screen instead of a raw hash

This time around, the latest to adopt the standard is Trezor, which has turned on clear signing through the standard.

The development was confirmed by Trezor and the Ethereum Foundation on X on September 8, and it extends the security effort that the Foundation first launched in May to another set of hardware devices.

Why was signing a hash the weak point?

In the past, users could not confirm that the amount they were about to approve was the correct one that had appeared on the computer screen. The example that Trezor used in its announcement was that of a user who wants to “swap 2,000 USDC for ETH.” That is the description they see on their screen; however, the data that reaches the wallet arrives as a string of hexadecimal calldata. This calldata is presented as a hash the reader could not read.

That is how crypto transactions have been done for a very long time. The act of approving that transaction also means trusting that the description on the computer, which may be compromised, matches what the transaction really did.

If your machine was tampered with, you had no way to catch it on the device, and you might sign your assets away.

That gap is referred to as blind signing, and the Ethereum Foundation says it’s linked to some of the costliest thefts in crypto. A notable incident that was mentioned by the Foundation when it was launching what is now seen as a solution to the gap is the $1.5 billion Bybit breach, which is still the largest crypto hack on record.

What is changing on Trezor’s device screen?

With clear signing active, a supported Trezor pulls the transaction apart and renders it in plain language.

This makes the hardware wallet the final source of truth and not the computer that it is plugged into.

Trezor stated that users do not have to install or toggle anything, as the feature works automatically through Trezor Suite, WalletConnect, and Trezor Connect. It stated that the usual workflow remains unchanged.

The decoding stack is open-source, matching Trezor’s existing firmware. Also, the ERC-7730 standard itself is public.

At launch, Trezor lists major protocols, including 1inch, Aave, Lido, Tether, LiFi, and Hyperliquid, with more networks in progress. On hardware, the feature runs on the Trezor Safe 7, Safe 5, Safe 3, and Model T. The Trezor Model One is not supported.

A standard Ledger started and the Foundation now stewards

The plumbing behind the feature is ERC-7730, an open format that gives wallets a consistent way to translate contract calls into readable actions, amounts, tokens, and destinations. Ledger originally built the idea as an internal feature and later formalized it as ERC-7730 in 2024.

It then handed governance to the Ethereum Foundation to keep the standard neutral. Descriptors live off-chain in a registry at clearsigning.org, which lets existing contracts adopt the format without redeployment.

An attestation layer lets independent auditors vouch that a descriptor matches what a contract really does.

The Foundation’s Trillion Dollar Security Initiative, the same program behind the One Trillion Dollar Security Dashboard it launched in February, acts as steward of that registry.

The security payoff scales with adoption; this is because the standard only helps where a dApp has supplied a descriptor.

So the protection grows as more protocols and networks are added to the registry.
