Picture a pile of industrial waste that most mining companies treat as an environmental burden. For DRDGOLD (NYSE:DRD), that pile is a vault. Based in Johannesburg and operating since 1895, the company specializes in retreatment, scrubbing old surface tailings to recover gold that legacy miners missed decades ago. By turning environmental liabilities into a revenue stream, the company has carved out a unique, low-cost model in the Witwatersrand basin. As of October 23, the stock trades at $23.97 and has delivered a roughly 1% return over the past year.
Our proprietary Hidden Gems scoring system assigns DRDGOLD an overall Superscore of 78 out of 100, placing it in the Strong category. The Superscore is an AI-powered score that evaluates a company's overall strength by combining financial performance, product market position, technological capabilities, leadership quality, and relative valuation. It represents the unification of all our scores into a single score for public companies, with five rating bands: Exceptional (90-100), Strong (75-89), Above Average (60-74), Average (40-59), and Cautious (0-39). This score places the company in the Top ~13% of every company we score, ahead of roughly 87 out of every 100 firms. The Superscore is a data-driven signal worth investigating, and this analysis pairs the drivers of that strength with the constraints holding it back so you can decide if it earns a spot in your research queue.
The company maintains a high level of capital efficiency, meaning it generates substantial profit on a relatively small base of tangible assets. This efficiency helps it weather periods of high capital intensity, though it does not fully insulate investors from the risks inherent in its specific mining operations.

DRDGOLD is still fresh off one of the best years in its 131-year history. Fiscal 2026 revenue climbed 42%, headline earnings jumped 89%, and the board tripled the final dividend, all while the company carried zero bank debt. A roughly 40% rise in gold prices certainly helped, but production also came in about 5,000 ounces above guidance, which matters for a business built on squeezing metal out of aging waste dumps.
That said, a big test comes over the next 18 months. DRDGOLD is more than halfway through Vision 2028, a R10 billion program designed to lift monthly throughput from 2.15 million to 3 million tonnes. The Daggafontein facility took its first tailings in July, and the expanded Driefontein plant's new circuit poured first gold the same month, on time and on budget. Management calls fiscal 2027 the pivotal commissioning year. The company's solar plant and battery storage are helping on costs too, cutting grid electricity use by 10% last year.
Of course, the stock will swing with gold, and South African regulatory friction never fully goes away, but DRDGOLD is a debt-free name that pays growing dividends while expanding capacity, and the firm should still be primed for a strong performance over the next five years if Vision 2028 comes online on schedule, even if gold cools from current levels.
