Industrial stocks merit attention as defense spending, nuclear infrastructure, space technology, and logistics create new opportunities. But a share price below $50 does not automatically make a stock cheap.

Amentum (NYSE: AMTM), Intuitive Machines (NASDAQ: LUNR), and ZIM Integrated Shipping Services (NYSE: ZIM) demonstrate specific strengths: signed contracts, growth in the space sector, and potential acquisitions.

Government contracts and improving cash flow give Amentum its edge

Amentum provides engineering and mission-support services to government and commercial customers. In the third quarter of its fiscal 2026, the company booked more than $400 million in advanced nuclear awards and over $1 billion in classified defense awards.

Plus, Amentum was awarded about $250 million in critical digital infrastructure contracts for technology modernization, cloud and data center infrastructure, and communications networks.

Amentum's backlog reached $48.2 billion; however, only $6.2 billion of that was funded, meaning much of the backlog depends on government funding, contract execution, and timing. Free cash flow also improved to $135 million despite softer revenue for the quarter. This suggests that management is getting better at turning its business into cash even as sales face pressure.

Meanwhile, Amentum's shares trade at a price-to-earnings (P/E) ratio of about 23, so investors today are paying roughly $23 for each dollar of trailing earnings. On the flip side, gross debt was about $3.9 billion against a combined cash balance of around $459 million. Management also lowered fiscal 2026 revenue guidance to $13.8 billion to $13.95 billion.

Going forward, investors will still want to watch whether it can sustain its progress and reduce debt.

Rapid growth at Intuitive Machines comes with ongoing losses

Amentum might be doing well, but another company on the list is growing much faster. Intuitive Machines started with lunar missions and has since expanded into spacecraft, ground networks, mission operations, and satellite communications.

Its second-quarter 2026 revenue more than quadrupled year over year to $206 million, while its backlog rose to $1.8 billion. However, not all that backlog was organic, since $612.8 million came from its Lanteris acquisition.

Still, its national security vertical generated 30% of the company's second-quarter revenue. On top of that, it was awarded a contract for 18 Golden Dome missile-defense spacecraft.

But turning these contracts into profit remains the challenge. Intuitive Machines reported a $62.8 million generally accepted accounting principles (GAAP) net loss for the quarter, while its free cash flow was -$145.8 million for the first half. It ended the quarter with $367 million in cash and expects full-year revenue between $900 million and $1 billion.

Given the fact that Intuitive Machines still makes no profit, the next best valuation metric is its price-to-sales ratio (P/S), which is about 12. Intuitive Machines offers the most growth potential of the three, but investors must be comfortable with ongoing losses and the risk that growth may take longer than expected.

A pending acquisition offers conditional upside for ZIM shareholders

Meanwhile, the third company's potential upside depends less on growth and more on a pending acquisition. ZIM operates a global container shipping business, so its performance will be sensitive to available vessel capacity, freight rates, and trade demand.

Management recently raised full-year 2026 adjusted earnings before interest, taxes, depreciation, and amortization (EBITDA) guidance to $2.7 billion to $3 billion, suggesting a stronger near-term earnings outlook. Plus, ZIM's dividend yield is a little over 4%. That said, shipping is cyclical, and favorable conditions can change as freight rates and global trade patterns shift.

The potential upside with ZIM is its proposed acquisition of Hapag-Lloyd, with shareholders expected to receive $35 per share at deal close. But right now, the deal faces regulatory uncertainty in Israel.

Israel's Government Companies Authority stopped processing the existing application after a revised proposal was not submitted by the deadline. If the acquisition fails, investors would be left evaluating ZIM on its stand-alone earnings and the risks of the container shipping market.

What each company needs to deliver next

Together, the three companies face very different tests from here. Looking ahead, Amentum needs sustained cash generation, Intuitive Machines needs to turn its backlog into profit, and ZIM needs regulatory clarity on its deal. With all three trading below $50, the real question this October is which stock fits which investor.

Amentum stands out as the most balanced choice for investors who want established government contracts and improving cash flow, while ZIM suits those comfortable waiting on a deal that still needs approval. Intuitive Machines is the higher-risk, higher-reward pick for investors who can handle ongoing losses.
