If it seems like you've been waiting for ages to find out what the upcoming Social Security cost-of-living adjustment (COLA) will amount to, the good news is that you shouldn't have to be in the dark much longer. The Social Security Administration is scheduled to reveal an official COLA on Oct. 14. That means you only have to sit tight for another week.

But it's also important to know what to expect out of not just that announcement, but the 2027 COLA in general. Here's what you need to know if you're counting on that raise.

Current estimates say the 2027 COLA should be larger

Social Security COLAs are tied to inflation. Based on data from July and August, several notable experts are calling for a 2027 COLA of 3.5% to 3.6%. Compared to this year's 2.8% bump, a COLA in that range would be huge.

Of course, the COLA that comes through, whatever it amounts to, may be reduced by an increase in the cost of Medicare Part B. Seniors who are enrolled in Medicare and Social Security pay for Part B out of their monthly benefits automatically, so even a small premium hike could whittle the upcoming COLA down.

The 2027 COLA may not be the lifeline you think it'll be

If you're having a hard time paying your bills now, you might assume that a generous COLA in the new year will make a huge difference. In reality, the difference may be minuscule.

Let's say you collect a $2,000 monthly Social Security benefit today, and that the 2027 COLA is 3.5%. That puts an extra $70 in your pocket, minus what Medicare Part B eats up if that premium applies to you.

That $70 might help offset some of the cost increases you've been facing, like higher grocery bills or gas prices. But will a $70 increase (minus a potential Part B offset) eliminate or even heavily reduce your general financial stress? Probably not.

It's important to realize that Social Security COLAs aren't meant to help seniors beat inflation. Rather, those COLAs are simply designed to keep pace with recent inflation. And if prices climb higher in 2027, even a generous 3.5% or 3.6% COLA may not hold up well.

So as you gear up for the big COLA announcement next week, take the time to think about how much that raise might really do for you. And then, come up with a plan to improve your financial picture, whether it involves reduced spending, part-time work, or a combination of the two.
