Key Points

  • MaxLinear stock gained 50.7% in September 2026.

  • Demand for the optical networking chips that link AI data centers was the main driver.

Shares of MaxLinear (NASDAQ:MXL) gained 50.7% in September 2026, according to data from S&P Global Market Intelligence. The fabless semiconductor designer is up 549% over the past year as of Oct. 2.

Three things drove last month's surge.

Missed Nvidia in 2009? This Rare Signal Is Flashing Again. In 2009, a "Double Down" signal flashed for a little-known chipmaker called Nvidia. For the first time in years, that same "Total Conviction" signal is flashing for a company 1/100th the size of Nvidia. Continue »

  • There's accelerating demand for the optical networking chips that link AI data centers.
  • MaxLinear got some bullish analyst reports.
  • The stock completed a rebound from summer lows around $60.

A sharp pullback in the middle of the month had more to do with the chip sector as a whole than with MaxLinear itself.

AI data center demand lifted MaxLinear shares

MaxLinear makes digital signal processors, or DSPs, that sit inside the optical modules connecting servers in AI data centers. That's a lucrative business as tech giants are building AI data centers as fast as regulators and budgets will allow.

Management has raised its optical data center outlook in each of the last three quarters. The company started the year saying that business would top $100 million, and the midpoint of current guidance is $220 million.

Speaking at a technology conference on Sept. 9, CFO Steven Litchfield noted that chip prices are holding firm. Lead times for new orders are 26 to 28 weeks and MaxLinear's customers are currently setting up deliveries for the spring of 2027.

"I don't anticipate pricing coming down much between now and the end of next year," Litchfield said. "The market continues to grow."

The company is indeed firmly attached to the AI boom, and specifically to the related AI data center construction megatrend. MaxLinear holds no more than 7% of the optical module market, and Litchfield hopes to roughly triple that footprint over the next 2-3 years. If management is even half right, that's a lot of room for near-term growth.

Add a positive credit outlook from S&P Global Ratings on Sept. 11, price targets of $125 from StoneX and $120 from Stifel, and a bounce from summer lows near $60, and MaxLinear's shares had plenty of tailwinds last month.

The surge included one troubling dip, though. MaxLinear slid about 9% from Sept. 11 to Sept. 14, alongside chip peers such as Rambus and Allegro MicroSystems.

AI security events made investors worry about slower software development and lower AI hardware requirements. The trough didn't last long, but the high-tech corner of Wall Street got a healthy reminder of security concerns.

The catch behind MaxLinear's big September

Before anyone calls this a victory lap, the bounce comes with a few asterisks.

MaxLinear's stock has essentially moved sideways from early May to the start of October amid a macro-driven summer slump. It's a volatile name, and investors should be prepared for continued speed bumps given lofty valuation multiples.

Trading at 39 times forward earnings estimates, MaxLinear makes high-priced stocks like Credo (22.7x) and Broadcom (18.4x) look affordable.

There's no denying that MaxLinear's management has ambitious growth plans, but the stock is a risky bet. I'll certainly watch for MaxLinear's Q3 report on Oct. 28, but I'm not slamming the "buy" button right now.
