Dow Jones futures rise ahead of US PMI data

Source Fxstreet
  • Stock futures inch higher as falling bond yields and lower oil prices lift market sentiment.
  • Caution lingers as markets price in a 90% chance of a December Fed rate increase.
  • Tech stocks pushed the Nasdaq to new records, driven by strong enthusiasm for AI advancements.

Dow Jones futures gain by 0.12% to trade near 52,350 during European hours on Wednesday. Meanwhile, S&P 500 futures advance by 0.10% to trade around 7,840, while Nasdaq 100 futures inch higher 0.03% to trade near 31,040.

US stock futures gained traction as falling oil prices and declining bond yields provided welcome support to equities. Market sentiment was primarily boosted by growing optimism surrounding a potential de-escalation in the US-Iran conflict. Despite these gains, traders may remain cautious given the Federal Reserve’s hawkish monetary policy stance, with Fed policymakers continuing to indicate that an additional interest rate hike before the end of the year remains a distinct possibility.

Financial markets are increasingly accounting for this tighter policy path, with the CME FedWatch Tool reflecting a 90% probability of a rate hike in December. Investors are now shifting their attention to the preliminary US PMI data scheduled for release later on Wednesday for fresh economic signals.

In Tuesday's regular trading session, Wall Street turned in a mixed performance: the Nasdaq Composite added 0.45%, the S&P 500 closed flat, and the Dow Jones dipped 0.36%. The tech-heavy Nasdaq touched a new record high during the session, propelled by strong advances in AI infrastructure companies.

Market enthusiasm for artificial intelligence was further bolstered by a strong reception for Meta’s Muse AI agent. Additionally, sentiment received a lift as Anthropic prepares to launch a new, cost-effective AI model designed for broad business applications ahead of its highly anticipated Wall Street debut.

Global risk tone sees an uneven session

Analysts at Danske Bank’s Danske Research Team highlight that “global risk sentiment had an interesting session yesterday,” with an early risk-on move driven by lower Oil prices ultimately fading into a more muted close. They note that global equities finished only marginally higher, with the overall index up about 0.1%, the S&P 500 essentially flat, and the Nasdaq and Russell 2000 outperforming with gains of around 0.5%. Looking ahead, Danske points out that Asian equities are mixed overnight, while US and European futures “point to a modestly positive open,” underscoring the still tentative nature of the current risk backdrop.

Dow Jones FAQs

The Dow Jones Industrial Average, one of the oldest stock market indices in the world, is compiled of the 30 most traded stocks in the US. The index is price-weighted rather than weighted by capitalization. It is calculated by summing the prices of the constituent stocks and dividing them by a factor, currently 0.152. The index was founded by Charles Dow, who also founded the Wall Street Journal. In later years it has been criticized for not being broadly representative enough because it only tracks 30 conglomerates, unlike broader indices such as the S&P 500.

Many different factors drive the Dow Jones Industrial Average (DJIA). The aggregate performance of the component companies revealed in quarterly company earnings reports is the main one. US and global macroeconomic data also contributes as it impacts on investor sentiment. The level of interest rates, set by the Federal Reserve (Fed), also influences the DJIA as it affects the cost of credit, on which many corporations are heavily reliant. Therefore, inflation can be a major driver as well as other metrics which impact the Fed decisions.

Dow Theory is a method for identifying the primary trend of the stock market developed by Charles Dow. A key step is to compare the direction of the Dow Jones Industrial Average (DJIA) and the Dow Jones Transportation Average (DJTA) and only follow trends where both are moving in the same direction. Volume is a confirmatory criteria. The theory uses elements of peak and trough analysis. Dow’s theory posits three trend phases: accumulation, when smart money starts buying or selling; public participation, when the wider public joins in; and distribution, when the smart money exits.

There are a number of ways to trade the DJIA. One is to use ETFs which allow investors to trade the DJIA as a single security, rather than having to buy shares in all 30 constituent companies. A leading example is the SPDR Dow Jones Industrial Average ETF (DIA). DJIA futures contracts enable traders to speculate on the future value of the index and Options provide the right, but not the obligation, to buy or sell the index at a predetermined price in the future. Mutual funds enable investors to buy a share of a diversified portfolio of DJIA stocks thus providing exposure to the overall index.

Memory chips surge, Nasdaq notches a second straight record close — why the Dow fell 185 points anywayMicron gained 5%, SanDisk 6.8%, Seagate 4% and Western Digital 3% as the memory complex led the Nasdaq Composite to a second consecutive record close of 27,244.28.
