Morgan Stanley Names 3 Biotech Breakthroughs That Offer Investment Opportunities

Morgan Stanley named three biotech breakthroughs that could reward investors, spanning Alzheimer’s drugs, gene editing, and artificial intelligence (AI).

Analysts Sean Laaman and Maxwell Skor published the research, and it coincided with the bank’s annual Global Healthcare Conference in New York.

Biotech Breakthroughs Carry Multibillion-Dollar Price Tags

Morgan Stanley’s report sizes the Alzheimer’s drug market at $70 billion. The bank splits it between therapies that slow cognitive decline and treatments for symptoms such as psychosis and agitation.

The bank sees upside beyond drugmakers. Delaying nursing home entry by 12 to 18 months could deliver US healthcare value worth multiples of list price. Diagnostics, care delivery, retirement, and insurance firms could also benefit or need to adapt.

Early gene-editing therapies worked ex vivo, meaning clinicians removed cells, edited them in a lab, and returned them. In contrast, in-vivo versions edit DNA inside the body. That could open organs not easily removed, including the brain, heart, eyes, and liver.

Morgan Stanley forecasts a $10 billion in-vivo market by 2035 in near-term indications. Meanwhile, consensus sits at $6 billion. Data due over the next 18 months could set how investors value these platforms.

Morgan Stanley Favors AI Suppliers Over Drug Developers

Analysts estimate AI could cut discovery timelines from about 4.5 years to 1.5 years. It could also lower research and development costs by 25% to 60%.

Yet there is little proof that AI raises the odds of a drug reaching patients. Therefore, the bank prefers the picks and shovels of AI, meaning firms supplying data, tools, and computing power.

Those businesses already convert adoption into revenue and rely less on binary clinical outcomes. The bank selectively monitors biotechs built around AI for clinical inflection points and treats large-cap productivity gains skeptically.

Trial Data and Oil Prices Could Test the Thesis

Clinical data can still swing biotech shares sharply, as Moderna’s August rally showed after a late-stage cancer vaccine result.

Timing also matters. Morgan Stanley strategist Mike Wilson warned in mid-September of a correction within 30 days if oil spikes drain liquidity.

The report suggests the most actionable exposure sits furthest from the lab, while the biggest upside awaits data.
