Britain's Bank Lobby Kicks Out Coinbase: Are Lenders Shutting Crypto Out?

Source Beincrypto

Coinbase has lost its membership of UK Finance, the trade body that lobbies for Britain’s banks. The group’s board sent the US crypto exchange a termination letter last week, Bloomberg reported on Wednesday.

UK Finance speaks for around 300 banking and finance firms. Its board ended the membership after reviewing its eligibility framework, and Coinbase can appeal, according to Bloomberg.

What Losing the UK Finance Seat Means for Coinbase

Bloomberg based its report on people with knowledge of the matter. UK Finance describes itself as a membership organization for the banking and finance industry.

A trade body is not a regulator, however. The expulsion does not affect Coinbase’s licences from the Financial Conduct Authority (FCA), Britain’s financial watchdog. Its UK operations also continue as normal.

Coinbase has been expanding in Britain this year. In July, the FCA granted it an investment licence covering stocks and derivatives. The approval let UK retail users trade shares on the app for the first time.

“Coinbase is building the everything exchange: one platform, one login, for your entire financial life,” the exchange said.

Coinbase made that pitch in its UK license announcement. Rival Robinhood, by contrast, won a narrower UK crypto approval in August.

Why UK Banks and Crypto Firms Are Clashing

The removal lands during a long fight over bank payments. In January, the UK Cryptoasset Business Council, an industry group, said banks were blocking or delaying about 40% of payments to crypto platforms.

Its survey covered 10 exchanges, Coinbase among them. Seventy percent of those exchanges said UK banks had grown more hostile over the previous year.

The friction also shows up in policy. The Bank of England still plans to keep a cap on stablecoin issuance, even after dropping limits on how much individuals can hold.

The clash is not limited to Britain. In the US, JPMorgan CEO Jamie Dimon has pledged to fight the CLARITY Act crypto bill, which would set rules for digital asset markets.

Coinbase can still challenge the UK Finance decision. Meanwhile, Britain’s full crypto regime takes effect in October 2027, according to Coinbase.

US to delay new "overcapacity" tariffs on China — what the pause means for trade, inflation and the dollarWashington is expected to hold off announcing new tariffs over Chinese "overcapacity" until after the 24 September summit, according to Bloomberg. The postponed plan would have added 7.5% to Chinese goods, taking second-term US tariffs to around 20%. Here is what is on the table, and what a deal versus no deal would mean for the yuan, Hong Kong equities and the dollar.

Memory chips surge, Nasdaq notches a second straight record close — why the Dow fell 185 points anywayMicron gained 5%, SanDisk 6.8%, Seagate 4% and Western Digital 3% as the memory complex led the Nasdaq Composite to a second consecutive record close of 27,244.28.
