Apple Stock Tests Key Support as iPhone Duo Launch Puts $318.64 Back in Focus

Source Tradingkey

TradingKey - Apple begins trading on Thursday, September 10 at $315.34 with a verified closing price of $315.34 on Wednesday, September 9, down about 0.28% from the $316.22 previous close, and almost exactly matching the $315.43 chart print. The stock is holding just above the support band of approximately $312.56 to $308.36 having pulled back from the $328.79 area. Fundamentally, the new catalyst is the announcement of Apple’s first foldable iPhone (priced at $1,999) along with news of a $1,199 iPhone 18 Pro starting price and efforts to integrate Apple Intelligence more broadly across its product line. The constraints on supply and costs of components are limiting how quickly Apple can monetize a strong demand for its hardware.

The iPhone Duo Opens a New Premium Category

Apple’s largest September event is undoubtedly the unveiling of the iPhone Duo. Priced at $1,999 it is Apple’s first foldable device and features a 7.6” internal display and uses the A20 Pro chip along with the opportunity for customers to purchase up to 2TB of storage.

The logic is simple. The premium segment of the smartphone market, while growing slowly at best, has inherently limited upside. Apple can sustain high average selling prices while enjoying limited market share growth. The hope is that a foldable smartphone category, if successful, can extend the product lifetime, encourage upgrades, and encourage as a conduit for more premium after-market purchases.

The real risk is demand. At a price point of $1,999 the iPhone Duo is even more expensive than traditional premium flagship models. To be successful, customers must maintain demand throughout the expected life of the product.

iPhone 18 Pro Pricing Shows Apple Is Protecting Margins

While the iPhone 18 Pro has new upgraded features, management has also pointed out increased costs due to higher memory and semiconductor prices. With these cost increases, Apple has chosen to increase the starting price of the iPhone 18 Pro to $1,199.

Think about it this way, rather than absorbing all of these increased costs, Apple is going to price these cost increases to consumers. Should demand hold, this could protect gross margins. However, it leaves the investors with the Duo to ponder. How much can this premium price increased from Apple be absorbed by the installed base to sustain the desired rate of upgrades?

Q3 Results Were Strong, but the Quality Needs Context

June quarter revenue of $109.4 billion for Apple, Inc. representing a year-over-year increase of 16%, and diluted EPS increasing 29% to $2.02 was an impressive start to the company’s fiscal Q3 2026. Even more impressive, as this puts Apple at a revenue mark that has never been seen during a June quarter. iPhone revenue increased to $54.25 billion, and Mac revenue increased by nearly 29%.

That said, Apple reports a gross margin of 50.1%, which benefitted by nearly two percent due to refunds on tariffs. Also, diluted EPS increased by $0.11 due to tariff refunds. So, the margin picture of Apple’s revenue is not nearly as impressive as reflected on the revenue numbers.

Additionally, Servicess revenue grew by 12.1% to reach $30.74 billion, which, unfortunately, came in softer than analysts expected. Long-term Earnings Quality of the company is also jeopardized by the lag of Services, which is a higher margin business than hardware.

Supply Constraints Are the Main Near-Term Operating Risk

For Apple’s fiscal 2026, the September-quarter outlook appears less impressive than Wall Street expected, with management attributing the projected shortfall largely to supply constraints relative to demand. Apple continues to grapple with the same Production Constraints that exist with Advanced Processors and Memory.

These Constraints may limit shipments despite strong demand. There is a possibility Apple may even leave damaged revenue should Supply Constraints remain through the holiday season.

Apple Intelligence Is Expanding Through the Ecosystem

Rather than placing AI solely within a standalone chatbot, Apple is placing AI across the Watch, Health app, and Siri, extending AI across the ecosystem. Apple’s strategy uses on-device AI and Private Cloud Compute, which maintains the company’s focus on privacy.

This is an important opportunity for Apple since the company owns the hardware and software of the operating systems and distribution for a large, established customer base. This creates a challenge of execution, and Apple needs to show that its AI will keep up with competition that moves at a faster pace, and will create additional meaningful Service revenues.

Apple Technical Analysis: $318.64 Is the Recovery Pivot

AAPL closed at $315.34 on September 9, which is almost exactly in line with the $315.43 placed on the chart, and now sits above the $312.56 to $308.36 support zone. I’m interested in this area because it also correlates with the upward trendline and moving average, making it a critical level in the current structure.

Apple Price Chart - Source: Tradingview

Immediate resistance is at $318.64. A 4-hour close above that level will better the short-term view and target $328.79. above that, resistance is at $337.29 and $344.15.

RSI is at 47, and is below its signal line at 57, so the recent rejection was with weakening momentum. Below $308.36 is strong support; a break below it would expose $300.55, and below that is $289.99.

Key Levels

·       Latest completed close: $315.34

·       RSI: Around 47, momentum weakened

Why is Apple stock in focus now?

Apple has launched its first folding iPhone, increased pricing, and expanded Apple Intelligence across its ecosystem. The opportunities are richer hardware options and higher average selling prices. The constraints remain tight advanced chips, memory, and supply.

What level confirms further AAPL upside?

A 4-hour close above $318.64 will improve the short term outlook and support a test of $328.79. A break below $308.36 will test the support area at $300.55, and below that is $289.99.

Bottom Line

The launch of the iPhone Duo on September 9 will not be a straightforward product-launch story. The iPhone Duo has the potential to create a new specific premium class. Furthermore, price hikes on the iPhone 18 Pro may serve to protect margins. Softer Services growth along with supply constraints and a lower technical momentum reading cautions bulls. I will adopt a cautiously bullish view as long as the price is above $308.36, but the bulls will not see an upward rise to $328.79 unless they push past the resistance of $318.64.
