What this transaction means for investors

There are many reasons an insider may sell shares in a company. One reason could be the need to raise cash to fund a large personal expense. Another reason could be for a reasonable portfolio diversification unrelated to their outlook for the company. A third reason could be what investors fear most: a bearish outlook on the company's future.

However, there is only one reason an insider buys stock: they believe the share price is going up.

By this measure, Green's $1 million purchase of Ecolab shares is a bullish sign. Bullish, too, is the fact that studies show that an insider purchase more often than not presages a higher stock price 30 days later.

Lane has been a director of Ecolab since 2022 and is a veteran of the pharmaceutical industry Ecolab serves, so presumably he knows the business inside and out.

The business itself is primed to improve from what is already a decent base. The company is widening its margins through acquisitions, business wins, and increased use of automation. Those should help earnings in 2027, which are expected to be around $2.6 billion, up nearly 25% from fiscal 2025. Management forecasts sales momentum approaching 20% annually within the next few years. Long-term earnings growth estimates are mid-teens, and management also says it is confident in maintaining its healthy dividend.

We like to see insider buying of Green's magnitude as a sign of support for what is a positive corporate outlook. He wouldn't be putting his money into shares if he didn't expect these expectations to come to fruition.
